So a release date for the PC version of Fez has been announced. May 1st. I never got to play the Xbox version (not having an Xbox was a real contributing factor there!) but I am totally going to get it on PC

Is anyone else excited for the PC release? I can only imagine releasing an indie game on that scale... Maybe one day!

It's a really pretty game. Might grab it as a part of an indie bundle if the deal is good enough. Can't say I'm excited about it really.
I find it a bit odd actually that in terms of value for money indie games are going backwards. Something like Fez could have been made 5 years ago for free. That might be a bad example actually because Fez is technically more advanced than most indie games.

But it still makes me think that I could easily release one of my big games commercially nowadays. Maybe with a little extra polish than I'd usually bother with.

Also just a little plug for James Whitehead's two games Lunnye and Wake which are both now on steam btw.

I only heard of Fez earlier this year, when I watched the Indie Game: The Movie in February. Looks enjoyable, and I'm personally edging closer to non-violent games these days. It might be fun to pick up and play; it's definitely one of the prettier, more stylish indie games I've seen.

If it's on XBox 360, I might purchase it through that instead, as my partner and I often use it: I play, and she watches until she's hooked on it. When the tax refund arrives, I'll look for it.

I think the playing field has been leveled in terms of indie game development, with all the SDKs out there, exporters, accessible technology, and even multiple sales/distribution platforms. If one wants to dip their toe in the pond, then they'll likely make at least a little bit of cash from their hobby (even if it's from just their supportive friends). If they want to make a living from it...Well, let's just say the competition is growing daily.

In fact, I'd say that with services like XBox Live and Steam there's very little room to call oneself an Indie game maker anymore. They all have access to and use the same tools: Kickstarter, Steam, Facebook, XBox Live Marketplace (or whatever it's called), and I assume the PS3 has a similar schematic. It's like a decentralized mass of "cells" or cubicles in a physically-disconnected-but-symbiotic game publishing corporation...Or perhaps just an underground subsidiary of Microsoft.

Wow, it's late and I'm rambling. My apologies.

I too heard of it through indie game the movie at the end if last year.

I think it's perfectly okay to ask money for your indie fame but I know what you mean by free well-known games becoming less prevalent these days. I think I'd only charge $5 at most for my larger scope games.
