heres my specs...
3.0 duel core processor
4 gigs of ram
an ati radeon 4850 hd 512mb
not sure what kind of mother board.

So ive had a ton of people test out my latest game Celestia! undead onslaught, and they all tell me that they dont experience any lag what so ever, even when a massive amount of objects are on screen. but on my computer, any time an elemental effect bursts (which increases the number of objects on screen by 100 - 200 in an instant) it causes lag. the game also doesnt run nearly as smooth on my computer as it does everyone elses, even people with really cruddy rigs. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?!!? i spent a lot of money on my computer and now its being weird... i cant run games at max settings anymore like i used to be able to. i used to be able to run crysis maxed out, i cant even play brink because it lags so super bad on lowest settings, black ops lags every few seconds at random while im moving around, even at lowest graphics settings, same with world at war, mass effect 2 (which i used to be able to run max settings no lag)
ive tried every possible combination of settings on catalyst control center and nothing seems to work, or even slightly improve my lag problem. i dont know if its my video card, it shouldnt be seeing as i used to be able to run everything maxed out. i have more than enough space on my hard drive, so i know its not the lack of space. theres no processes running in the background,

Just did a test, and while the game is running with chrome running in the background my cpu bounces between 65-90%, which it does even when chrome is closed. so im guessing... cpu is the problem? idk though...
Ive noticed my cpu coolant thing is a little dusty, could that be part of it? am i experiencing cpu spikes and thats whats causing lag? any info would be great.

my friend has an ati 4000+ not sure exactly which model, but i think it may be the same, and that certain model has issues with the factory cooler, you should check your graphics temperature to see if that is the problem, if it is you can buy a cooler and fit it on the graphic card.

That sounds like a distinct possibility, judging by the number of results you get from googling "ati radeon 4850 overheating".
Since you say it used to be fine, you might just need to clean some dust out of the fan.
You can also try "speed fan" - a free tool that lets you increase the speed of the fan.
Or you could just buy a new fan.

Having tried your game on an old computer, I'm a little suspicious that something may also be badly coded. It seems to run perfectly smoothly unless there are more than one or two enemies on screen, and then it slows down *a lot* (even without any shooting/blood/etc). With so few objects needed to cause slowdown, it seems unlikely that it would be the graphics to blame - more likely you have too many fastloops or something (maybe their platform physics or AI?).

i think theres 2 fastloops in the whole coding? 1 for the zombies gravity, and 1 for spawning zombies. too many active objects perhaps? i noticed that when i shot a high powered acid weapon the actives went from the average 190 or so to about 300, i fixed that to a degree, but im thinking that may have something to do with it, but as i said, my little brothers computer is half as good as mine and runs it perfectly smoothly, no lag, even when a high powered acid weapon is shot, along with a few other people who have tested it, i havnt experienced lag at all on any other computer ive used. you must have tested it on a REALLY old pc...

My friend had a HD4850. It was nothing but trouble - unlike the 4870 I own which takes two slots and weighs a lot due to its massive heatsink and fan, this was a single slot card and I do not think the cooling system was ever man enough.

Still sounds and odd problem, try monitoring your temperatures with Speedfan as Sketchy suggested.

I guess that explains why right after i bought it they stopped selling it, i do believe its been discontinued. it was awesome for a while, guess that means i need a new one. would buy one but i just got a 3ds today. oh well. i think im gonna switch to Nvidia, im not happy with ati, ive found too many problems with it and i dont like catalyst control center. today i cleaned out my computer, my processor was getting really hot, and i found out why after i took the heat sync off, the thermal paste was turned to dust lol. after i took it off i couldnt get my pc to boot up cuz it was overheating, had to reapply thermal paste to get it to boot. i think im in need of a new processor and a new video card. thanks for the replies everyone! speedfan helped out a lot, it helped me figure out what was overheating lol.

No, that's what I'm saying.
If it was graphics, just having two or three more objects to draw would cause little, if any drop in framerate (bearing in mind there's a lot of other stuff to draw anyway). I can have loads of blood and it doesn't cause problems - it's only the enemy objects that cause the drop in framerate, so it's likely part of their code to blame (maybe you only have 2 fastloops, but they're being repeated far too many times or something?). If they're properly coded, my computer can handle hundreds of objects with custom platform movements.

Obviously that doesn't explain why other games run poorly - I'm guessing there may be an unrelated problem with the graphics card as well.

See if your friends have a dual core processor as well. This may be causing you issues. There were many games that experienced framerate problems when dual core machines had just been introduced and software hadn't always been optimized to work properly with them.

Failing that, double-check to make sure there hasn't been a firmware update recently and/or confirm you have the most recent drivers for your devices (graphics card included). Sometimes driver updates "break" some games, but admittedly that's rare.

Try and see if this works. It's a solution for Prince Of Persia (2003) that fucks up when a computer has more than 1 core but you can try it on your game.
