For those of us interested in constructive criticism, and to help push others to want the same, how many of you think that the TDC forums should have a section specifically for people searching for crits and comments on their games? I don't see why it wouldn't work, as some other forums (pixel art forums come to mind) have showcase sections and sections for requesting critique.

No wishy washy crap. If you want critiques expect others to deliver them to you as they are without sugar coating anything in order to help improve your games , and expect to do others the same favor.

I believe a handful of people could gain some incentive from something such as this and become more motivated to the point of finishing their games and improving possible flaws.

what about the reviews section? or a projects page?

If you put a million monkeys at a million keyboards, one of them will eventually write a Java program.
The rest of them will write Perl programs.

Most people don't write reviews. Most reviews are to be expected on created games.

Critiques can be given on games as they are created to help improve them on the fly or before they are released and/or improve/fix flaws or prevent them from happening.

As for the project pages . . . very few people post on them. The forums are definitely one of the most active parts of TDC.

I'll share my second thought.

Eh, why not?

If it doesn't work out, we don't have to keep it.

My only reservation is that we already seem to have extraneous forums that should be consolidated and revised. (General AND misc? )

Agreed, I'm sure we can give it a go sometime. My own personal concern is that it will encourage people to say comments like "it's crap" rather than "I don't like it, because..."

Sure we can raise the idea in the admin forums though

Why not? A feedback forum could be great. Though mr. Frogster, you should really think about the fact that CC is not only putting down peoples' work and telling them how they should have done it, it's pointing out what you found good about it AND what you think could use improvment(if so, preferrably in what manner).

That would be a good idea. There is a system like this on Flashgamelicense which works really well. There is a huge difference between getting feedback while working on the game and getting it when the game is done.

Well of course. I'm all for constructive criticism, but its kind of hard to get through to people given the fact that

1. Their games are usually already completed.

2. The download comment sections can be hard to read and sort through at times.

3. Fewer people (sometimes) frequent the download comments sections less than the forums.

4. Most people just say "awesome game, but I didn't like X in it - >insert star rating here<" and then they're done.

Like Hayo said, getting feedback while a game is in progress and after a game is finished are almost two totally different things. In a forum environment most of the non-criticising comments will be weeded out and the developer can much more easily focus on the constructive ones.

My thoughts: Merge General with Misc, and to fill the space left behind from the merger, make a Critique board. *nodnod*

One thing though, don't name it Critique, name it Feedback, since we're not looking for critique but rather, feedback.

Why wouldn't you look for critique?

Critique helps people find what is potentially wrong/bad with/about their creations and also helps them to fix them. Nothing is held back in a true critique, and receiving 100% honest critiques should be an offense that merits much thanks

This is generally what the forums are for on project pages - but I suppose those don't really get "seen" or promoted enough. It's certainly something to think about.

Exactly.

People look at new projects, favorite them, maybe post on the forum (if the dev initiated a post), give a comment or two and be done.

Projects often only provide videos as well.

On feedback vs. critique: Same thing. It's just that critique looks a lot like critical (well, it is being critical. ), which might scare people. We could call just it a Feedback forum to make it less intimidating.

Flava, is it possible to move all topics from one forum to another? I'd bet that this would be too big of a mess to bother with, but having both the General and Miscellaneous forums does seem redundant. (and maybe even so with the Klik and Non-klik coding forums as well.)

It should be possible yes - may mess some things up though, but we'll have to have a think about it properly first.
