Heres a little blast from two years ago. From my last project Gridquest, released Summer/Fall 2008
Can be found here: http://create-games.com/download.asp?id=7456

I made sure to chock my game full of so many secret areas and puzzles I'm afraid far too few people who played even encountered them at all, much less solved them! Some were nasty tough, and I've gotten requests on hints or walkthroughs over the ages, but it was very difficult to format a way to show how to get them done. IE, it would take a lot of work, and I've been busy with the rest of life. However, recording a few youtube videos goes a long way!

This is a walkthrough of all seven "secret" areas in the game, as well as where to find them!:

The first is found in the Funny Farm, west of Southfield
The second is under the Spider Cavern, south of the first waypoint after the first boss battle.
The third is under the Burning Town, south of the Royal Field. You need teleport to reach it
The fourth is under the Treasury, west of the second waypoint after the second boss battle. You need teleport.
The fifth is in the Cave Level 5, south of Southfield at the third waypoint, right before the gates of acheron.
The sixth is under the Blood Fortress, east of the final dungeon and last to final waypoint. You need teleport
The seventh is the most hidden of all. This is north of the town, and you need teleport AND all three items "of death" to reach it. Since these items would be extremely difficult to obtain legitimately (drops only in the blood fortress and beyond, and the hidden areas post abyss), you might just do well enough by editting the .ini files to make value B of your items = 10

I'm particularly proud of that final ice puzzle, its a shame that I doubt anyone anywhere got to play it.

The rest of these are pretty simple walkthroughs.

#1: The Castle Tower (First Big Dungeon)

#2: The Dark Sea (First Hidden Dungeon)

#3: The Necropolis (Second Hidden Dungeon)

#4: The Blood Tower (Final Dungeon!)

There is one more super duper secret hidden dungeon, far more challenging than any of those and more epic, full of ridiculously powerful monsters and imperial storm troopers. It requires cunning and brute force to enter, and you only get 1 shot at it.
Sadly my footage of that one got corrupted and I didn't post it.
If anyone likes these videos, I might record it again. I'd have to hack a stronger character to beat it though ~_~

And finally, this little easter egg that you might find hilarious:

There are 4 different outcomes to the Sphinx riddle:
1) You type in a jumble of letters, and nothing happens
2) You type in a wrong word, and Nosteward comes to life and attacks you
3) You type in the right word (guess what it is), and pass freely
4) You type in "RODENTS" and get transported to an ungodly dimension of oversized rats

Thanks! Kind of a shame really, none of these videos got views. Actually some were viewed 0 times by anyone but me!
Its hard to think that of the very few people who played it, even fewer got anywhere in it

But if you want some idea of what it was like later on, take a peek at say the Blood Tower video.
It shows off some of the level design and puzzles that I'm very proud of.

Or the final sliding puzzle in the first video. I bet not a single person besides myself ever even got to that.

The game sparked my interest from a trailer? . . .which is extremely rare for a klik game.

I played it and was immediately turned off by the camera. The grid based movement/scrolling absolutely raped my eyes. IIRC you were just kinda dropped in and I didn't really have much drive to figure out where I was supposed to go.

Games like the old Zeldas drop you right in, but they always provide a driving force right at the start.

True that. I really would have liked to go back and rewrite the beginning 10-20 minutes. Thats one of the issues with games that take a long time to make- the ending is usually much higher quality than the beginning. You go from mindlessly wandering around a field hitting rats with a stick, to solving puzzles and particle spray battles that would make chips challenge jealous. Oh well

Long games are almost always better in the end, but that doesn't mean they can't grab you from the start.

Take a look at a Link to the Past.

You are thrown into the beginning with little direction. The key word is little. You know that your uncle has left the house during the rain to head for the castle. You can assume this because of the voice link hears while he is in his bed. The castle is a pretty epic opening level and grabs the players attention immediately. Once that section is over, the player has a taste of what the game has to offer, and will probably want to stay tuned in for more.

Another example would be Secret of Mana, but I don't even know where in the world to start. The gameplay consists of an exponential ramp that starts out as awesome, and ends in out of this world.

Grid quest starts out more like a MMORPG in which you are thrown into a field with no sense of direction.

Once again though, that isn't the reason I didn't play it. The main reason I didn't really attempt to get far is the camera movement =/. I would actually like to see what the game has in store later on.
