I have a part of my game where the player reads a newspaper. I am using the text string to make the headline. No matter how big I make the headline, or how long I make the headline. It comes across with the words on top of one another. I need it to be one straight line of text. I used every font, every size, but still the words come out like a paragraph. Any help would be appreciated.

If you don't need to change the headline at any point you could just make it an image instead.
Just right click on the string object and mouse over the "create" menu, then click "backdrop"

What is the alignment? if it's centered your words wont fill up the whole available space horizontally.

I have tried to align them in the center, and I still have the problem. The headlines vary depending on two randomizing factors

I'm not sure why the string object is giving you trouble, but you can always try one of the other text objects instead.
Also, you can use the "Calculate Text Rectangle" extension to resize your text so that it best fits the page.
I made a very basic example for you here:
