What are your favorite Indie Games so far? Mine are...

Braid- This game is, out of all of the Indie games I've played, THE best Indie game Imo- just maybe my all round favorite game too! Its beautiful yet haunting atmosphere, compliments it's mature story and painterly graphics. Plus the inconcievable yet ingenious plot twist at the very end really hit me hard! This game also features an outstanding soundtrack, and gameplay that exercises the parts of your brain you use least. This game is touching, innovative, and brilliant. Braid is a MUST play.

10/10

Noitu Love II: Devolution- It's a very nice 2D beat em up along with a nice control scheme. This game sports a great sound track too. While it doesn't take long to beat the game, (Pssh... barely 2 days! ) plus just about 7 highly detailed levels, and an on-par storyline, it's a solid game.

8/10

Lugaru- I can't expect anything else than someone saying "FURRIES!", plus it's kind of awkward seeing a bunny walking on two legs, but hey, this game is pretty entertaining. The gameplay is a 3d beat em up featuring martial arts, 3 weapons, and other crazy antics. The graphics aren't the best, concerning it was made by a highschooler, but they're decent for that age. Unfortunately, the music is monotonous but albeit not very concerned for, as it's ignored over the constant action going on. Odds and ends, Lugaru is an enjoyable game.

8/10

! It kinda was an indie game until Valve bought them up. I believe. But they have a habit of doing that (Counterstrike, Portal).

I got tired of Braid before the first level was even over. I uninstalled it. Does that make me a bad person?

I've always been more of a maker than a player. I'd rather spend my time creating stuff. But I do enjoy playing games.

Each to his own. But imo, yes. Braid is beautiful in every aspect. You can't just play ONE level- unless great indie games aren't your thing, by maybe level 2 you're hooked.

Oh yeah, forgot about Cavestory. Epic game, epic soundtrack!

Edit: Oops! Forgot a bunch of them.

Lol, didn't we have another topic like this?

Dwarf Fortress
It's like Dungeon Keeper, but soooo much more fun. It's like Lego in that you can build some amazing structures, but it's better because you have combat. It's like the Sims in that every dwarf has his own personality. And what's amazing is that all the new updates that keep coming up on it. I never bought any games ever since I found DF. No commercial game is as good as it.. it's made by only one man, who's a math genius and survives on donations. If that ain't indie, I don't know what is. And it's still incomplete.

12/10

Armageddon MUD
Most of the world has been shaped by player actions - clans, cities being founded, razed, and rebuilt, revolutions, wars.. almost everything was by players. Murder, betrayal, corruption - it's far more interesting than most movies and more addictive. And unlike other MUDs, which take days of grinding to get out of newbie status, Armageddon's fun, for me, began just a few hours into the game, even though my character had no skills. -1 star just because some players are horrible sports, but it's still more amazing than every other RPG.

11/10

Spelunky
Procedural map generation + treasures + platformer =
It's an awesome game in its own right, but too difficult for me. But what's good is that it makes every retry fun and addictive.

8/10

Art of Theft
I dislike the storyline, art style, and the alarms system, and AGS, but it's a really fun game. About stealing things.

6/10

I'm rating it on a commercial scale: It's the same as I'd give a game that costs $20.

I heartily agree with Muz about Dwarf Fortress. Tonnes of fun, both in Fortress mode and Adventure. Plus there are some insane mechanics behind it for an ASCII game. I mean using fractals to generate landscapes, and actual fluid dynamics for rivers?

I'd like to add Cortex Command into the mix. Pretty solid once you get past the slightly dodgy control scheme, but the modding community behind it is already huge and with a few mates it's tremendously entertaining.

And yes, Cave Story will always be legendary.

Hmm, I might have to try Dwarf Fortress. Apparently it's pretty fun. In all respects, Braid is still the meaning of 2D, imo.

I tried DF and couldn't get into it. I just had no idea what was going on or what to expect (I read on some site about stories, one involving some mother crawling around for her dying baby, wtf?). But I was never into Roguelikes though, with the exception of one on the PSP that I can't remember and PixelThiefs.

Oh my... I just downloaded Spelunky and had a few run throughs. It's fun and the graphics are brilliant, but my god is it hard. Takes me back to playing Nethack for hours and thinking "Wow, I'm actually getting somewhere," Then eating some poisoned food or some such minor error and dying. Good times, good times

I've always wanted to try Braid and Cave Story but I heard they weren't free. Maybe later, when I'm bored enough. Still would rather make games

Here's the best introduction to DF, in spirit and in style:
http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/intro.html

Also, the Dwarf Fortress Wiki explains a lot. DF has a learning curve of like 1 week or so, but it's well worth it

Heh, the guy who made it is my current idol. He's the main reason I go through all the math I do. He's a mathematician by profession, actually taught it university, so that's why it's using fractals and fluid dynamics. Actually quit his job to work on DF full time. As indie as it gets.

Cave Story is free. It's just they're re-releasing it on the Wii as a commercial game, with all new sucky graphics and music and, the holy grail of it all! Plans for paid DLC! w00t!

-.-

But the PC version is still out, still free and can be modded (there's a rock solid one called Jenka's something-or-other).
