I'm wondering what everyone here thinks about project updates and their timing. How often is too often to be making project updates? I was just editing the community project and had a substantial thing to say, but I didn't make a devlog about it because I made one just on the 8th of March, and I figure that now is too soon. What do you all think?

Also, Google Docs is amazing. It lets me give surveys for free to however many people I want. Case in point: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=cG1VR2tIdnlpQmlOaTRaMWV0V1NRREE6MA..

The above also being the substantial update I didn't make a devlog about.

Well, I don't speak for everyone, but I really don't care. As long as someone isn't just editing to get it bumped all the time, they can have as many stinkin dev logs as they want.

I like the notion of posting when you have something to say that the community would find interesting, or should know about.

Some are updated every few days, some every few months. Persunkally I wouldn't mind people doing daily updates if its a very active project.

I don't think time is the issue but rather, the amount of work actually done on the project between each update.

i post every little detail about every little thing i do. but seriously when i post in my dev log its more of a way to reflect after doing a good ammount of work and get an idea of the direction my project is taking. i believe it keeps me on track and focused, as well as giving people insight into my project. i mean, this isnt some multi-million dollar vision of beauty, so i have no problem sharing all of elements of gameplay as they come into existance. i like to feel like the people here that frequent my project page really enjoy what i have to say and see how my project is progressing. its like a party, except... with out anything fun really... unless you like games, i mean, really like games.

so therefore, i see no problem in posting once or twice a day, as long as you have something valueable to say, and updates and previews on your project, and nothing like "gee, i really didnt do anything today, kthanxbye." i really cant see anyone going "goddam, i cant believe their updating AGAIN. why cant they just stop working for like, life or something".

In my opinion i'd say only update when something new and cool needs to be said. In the case of my latest project, http://www.create-games.com/project.asp?id=1356 i haven't updated it for a very long time. This is because i haven't done anything cool or new on it for (you've guessed it!), a very long time. Other people do new or cool things very often to their project and therefore they update it more regularly, such as http://www.create-games.com/project.asp?view=main&id=1448 - and rightly so, since sumo148 is doing alot of cool and new things to the game!

Devlogs are a great way to keep yourself motivated in your project, kinda like when people losing weight keep record of their weight at every Fat-Fighters meeting. Displaying positive progress can motivate, and Devlogs are pretty similar.

I like projects that update a lot. I find that most of the people who actually lodge a complaint against projects that are updated too often are just jealous that their inactive projects get bumped off. Personally, I like it when people go "I added a tree!", "I added building codes!", "I drew this nifty animation of some trolls ganking a knight!"

The whole reason I like reading projects is because of I like to see the work put into a game. I don't really care enough about the game to download it after it's finished, but I do enjoy watching the kliking process go on - the learning, the *#$(# bugs, the new features and why the new features don't work out. It's a bit like a biography.

So, IMO, update as much as you want. Even if it's irrelevant things like surveys and thoughts about the game.

People report projects that are updated too often, what... the... f**k? That's the most moronic thing I've ever heard!

Ok I raise my hand up. I used to report projects that just said stuff like "making a game." or whatever even though because of their inactive nature they just drop off the list never to be seen again. But overactive projects?!

I'm with you Muz. If I'm a fan of a porject then I'd like to follow it closely. I like reading projects that are just mind dumps.

This probably sounds as dopey as can be, but which name are you asking for? My DC name, or the game name?

Good to report a non-active project though. Personally, I don't like projects that are "a graet game where you jump on things and so on". Making a project that doesn't have any effort put into it is bad. And yeah, writing updates that obviously have no effort in them (just to bump) is bad too. But yeah, I don't mind seeing a newbie write a whole post about how he spent the whole day trying to figure out the PMO object, even if I won't learn anything from it. It's.. fun to read those things. It's like making a game, but without the work
