This isn't really a programming question, and it has nothing to with mmf2 but I'll ask it anyway.

I have this game that was made around 2000-2001 and I've started playing it again, it's a 3d First-person-shooter but when I run it there are some problems. Some of the "objects" on the game (eg; Doors, conveyor belts, etc) are behaving strangely. One particular problem is the converyor belts, when I touch them my character flies backwards incredibly fast, making them impossible to get across; this never happened when I played it on my old computer. I looked through some sites and forums and found that bizarrely, the objects speed or "power" was corresponding to the FPS (Frames per second) of the game at the time; so the higher the FPS, the harder it would be to push doors and walk on conveyor belts. That explained why it was working on my old computer, and not my new one with a new graphics card and everything.

Sooo... I was wondering, are there any programs out there that purposefully raise your "CPU Usage", causing the FPS to lower when I play this game? Or any programs that override your graphics card, maybe something that lowers the core and memory clock? Just anything that can lower my FPS :S

back in the old days when they were making the transition between 386/486 chips and pentiums new machines had an (ironically named) turbo button which was supposed to deliberately slow the system down for such a purpose. nothing like that now as far as i know.

you could always underclock everything

Lol, I've underclocked everything to maximum (Or minimum.. whatever) and it's still too fast! I've been using RivaTuner, and I've underclocked everything as far as it will go (even though it said I shouldn't) and I've set the anti-aliasing to the highest setting (16xQ) aswell and believe it or not, it's still too fast I read in some forum that a guy got his to work by downloading a tool that ate up 90% of his CPU...

Maybe I can make a program in MMF2 that is designed to eat up my CPU, and just have it running in the background

its a shame really i have a pentium 3 celeron sitting on my desk, if i could send it to you through my modem i would!

I think I still have my old computer hidden in the depths of my house somewhere, but I don't it's worth finding that just to play one game with it

I tried running a few large programs in the background and got my CPU up to about 90% but it was unstable and was occasionally moving down to 50% or 40% and then shooting back up again, and the game's fps would change dramatically every now and then and it was driving me crazy

well i hate to admit defeat but it looks like old game hate new computer, old game want revenge! if it was available on any consoles it would be worth a try using an emulator but besides that i'm pretty stumped.

We used to have those on our school computers, I didn't know they were designed for that reason lol.

Try getting IE7 and running it a few times in the background. (Yet I say this using IE6. Lol)

Or you could go the "CPU Eater Program" route, and make a huge Active in MMF2 (or a hundred lol) that rotates 20 degrees per frame with full quality. Don't forget to turn the framerate way up!

If all else fails, resizing an image to 10,000x10,000 in MSPaint using Attributes seems to slow the computer down for me.

Better off using DosBox.

ATSlow is the program you're looking for BTW. I used to use it to play my old Dos Battletech games (Mechwarrior 1 ran so fast that as soon as I hit forward, I crashed through the gameworld.)

Thanks Knudde, but from what Google has told me, ATSlow doesn't exist any more

Do you know where I could find it? :S

Edit: Nevermind, I just played with the graphics card driver a bit and set it to maximum quality and low performance and set the maximum pre-rendered frames to 0. Now it works PERFECTLY

That was for DOS games anyway. I thought you were playing an older game for some reason. Games from 2000 don't seem "old" to me. Probably just me not wanting to admit I'm getting older.

I used to use a program called MoSlo (or MoSlow, can't remember) that did this job, automatically resctricing the speed at which a program could work. If you are really determined you could try to get some virtual machine software, and set up a vertual machine with the game's reccomended spec. Might work. Might not. I can't reccomend any VMs as I don't use any.
