I have at least 3 programs on this computer that occasionally ask to be updated, but never give me the option to say no. Anyone know a way around this that doesn't involve uninstalling them? (Adobe Reader, VAIO update and Norton)
You can disable them in most of cases by stating in the settings that your computer is not connected to the Internet. It works for Winamp. (The newest version requires IE, which I uninstalled )
Depending on the program it may still ask to update. Settings may let you disable auto-updates, but without specific program names it may be hard to help. (Oh, if it's an anti-virus, no matter how annoying it is, you should listen to it.)
Murdifying the process doesn't keep it from returning. It's either a zombie or a buddhist that believes in reincarnation. (DARG! I hate service unavailable! It won't let me post this!!)

I'd say replace Adobe Reader with Foxit Reader, and stop using norton and get either SpyBot S&D or Avast antivirus.

That's why I stop my XP apps from automatically updating.
I had MacDrive pester me every time I turned on/off the computer and empty the recycle bin. Really enraged me, I almost uninstalled it. Bought it in the end >>>

There's a trick to make Windows Updates not ask you to restart every minute (I found it myself ):
-Update Windows
-When update is done, do NOT click Restart later. Do not touch ANYTHING! (If you press Restart Later you're doomed, there's no way to stop it now!)
-Instead, go to Ctrl+Alt+Del Task Manager.
-(Make sure you're on the Applications Tab)
-Right click on the Windows Update window that asked you to restart and choose Go to Process
-Close the process!
It's quite useful to stay Up-to-Date without those annoying popup messages.
But I have to do that after every update? I work on my computer and I'd like a way to just stop any restarts from taking place. Why can't they just download the updates anytime and only install them when its shutting down. Surely that's a better method. It is but don't call me Shirley.
I've made a software that blocks other programs to shutdown the computer, but I've not released it yet because it's not finalized.
