Since you guys were kind enough to help sort out my video capturing software woes, I figured I'd post a video from Gridquest, showcasing just how awesome the combat can be. I think I actually impressed myself with how its turning out; roguelikes don't usually end up this.... fast paced. Ahaha
Mind this game has TONS of puzzle elements, exploration, random dungeons and other neat stuff, but this video is just of a single specific Human vs Bajillion Vampire battle. So without further ado:
*oh and some parts aren't fully debugged yet... ignore when theres an item in the wall. And that character was hacked to have awesomely good gear for that area of the game; that encounter would normally be much, much harder.
You can find an earlier, and uglier, look at the game here:

Windows media encoder has a bad habit of making graphics fuzzy, but a good habit of producing 1/100 the file size. Alot of that was me summoning those little balls of light that attack the enemies, which are pretty good at giving people seizures.
One suggestion - you have a lot of square-ish shapes where explosions or whatever they are radiate out in a square.
A better effect could be to use SIN() and COS() to make them radiate out in a circle. You can still snap 'em to the grid. I'll try making an example if I can be bovvered
EDIT: ...Okay, maybe it's not that easy...

I have a question: will this be turn based or active time? Because I'd love to be able to think about my next step when playing.
I used to have the nova effects in a circle, but I figured the distance was a little far and overpowering, so I removed the single explosion point on the corners, so now its just a square. Theres no real good other way to do it and keep in gridbased. And the gameplay is alot like a diablo genre; fully realtime, though you can pause the game at any point. Its really kind of a halfbreed between rogue and diablo styled games.
Yeah it was actually Sketchy who drew that vampire sprite, as well as about 10 other ones I'm using. Major thanks to Sketchy! Some of mine could still use a little improvement; the goblin archers look suspiciously like they are waving their dongs at you and proving to have marvelous aim and range.
looks pretty nice and fun one thing that bothers me though is the sprites. The player is viewed from a full top down perspective where at the enemies are not - this difference makes it look like the enemies are lying on their backs attacking
Also, the music sounded like heavy metal midi - is it custom made for your game, or something you grabbed somewhere? i would love to make a tune or 2 (would be mods and not midi) if you want
Thanks!
Yeah I'm not great at spriting at all, so most of the graphics are merely passable. After playing around with how to do the gfx for a while, I just decided to completely ignore perspective and put the enemies like that; it seems to not even be wrong once you get accustomed to it. I'm not a music composer elsewise myself, so all the tracks are from various games on vgmusic.com, and I plan on hunting them down and crediting them eventually Thanks for the offer, but its a bunch of effort to make tunes for it, and they would probably sound dramatically different from the stuff already in it. If I decide to go over the entire game with new graphics/music some day, I would appreciate it >.>
