Specifically, I just got a new internal card reader. I plug it in and start the computer , but it always hangs when it gets to checking the RAM.

If I disconnect the card reader, it boots as normal. The problem cannot be the computer trying to boot off the card reader, as it doesn't get past the memory check. The problem also cannot be anything windows/driver related for the same reason.

If I wait until windows starts before attaching the card reader, it all works perfectly, but this is obviously not very practical for an internal card reader.

I have tried looking in the bios for anything USB related, but the only thing I have found which will enable the computer to boot, is the "disable USB" setting.

If anyone can help, or knows where I might find someone who can, I'd love to hear about about it.

hmm, i know that it's possible to get some program that uses a card as additional RAM, but i think it's a windows program so that can't be this.

It sounds a bit strange, so all i can suggest is you either contact the place you bought it at, or demand a refund so you can buy another brand.

Wierd. I think it's trying to boot from the card reader. My comp usually tries from my pen drive, so there's no choice but for me not to put it in. It doesn't have a 'boot from removable drive' option or anything in the BIOS, but it still does so.

Do what most students do... don't turn off the computer .

when your computer boots, try hitting F11 repeatedly. Most BIOSes will present you with a screen that let's you choose what device to boot from. If it works, try selecting the harddrive.

Also, you can try to enter your BIOS and see if the boot up order of drives is set to your harddrive. It might be set to boot from your card thing.

Reminds me of my first comp. There wasn't any key to press to get into bios. To enter the bios setup you had to boot the comp from a certain "bios disc"

thanks for thre replies, but I've looked in the bios. It's set to boot from the floppy first, then CD, then HDD, then "boot from other drives" is disabled. Anyways, I think it hangs before it tries to boot from any drive - certainly before it shows the list of drives. Actually, with the card reader attached I can't even get into the bios - that's the point at which it dies "press DEL to enter BIOS, press ES" (should be "press ESC to skip memory check"). Returning the card reader is looking like the best suggestion so far...

It could just be a short in the device itself, have you tried exchaning it for the same one?
