I'm building a game which will play kinda like "R-Type". You all remember R-Type, yeah?

I was just wondering what everyones favourate controls for this genre were. Personally I like using the mouse although I think I may end up assigning movement to the arrow keys...

Well? Your thoughts?

R-Type by the way is a space shooter where you play as a space craft on the left of the screen shooting enemies whicg come on screen from the right.

Yeah if it's space you can use the arrow keys.. then use the "thrusters" idea to its full effect. By that I mean where the space craft glides around and continues in one direction for a few seconds. Instead of stopping dead in every movement/direction

Like the effect the mouse would provide. Keys FTW! Spacebar to shoot - I HATE having to use shift in every one's freakin games because they have no imagination to change the default controls..

User-configurable; mouse or keyboard.

Let people pick which key to use to shoot.

Bibin's right - the best way is to give a choice to the player. I can see how using the mouse may give better control overall, but I prefer the arrow keys in the end.

Yes I must say that I agree with all of you. I've recently been using mouse movement a lot and thought it was a nice change but what you said about the thursters etc... Yeah, arrow keys would make it much better. But yes, giving the user an option is what I'll do I think...

Thanks guys!

You might also want to add "hybrid mode" which used the mouse for shooting and movement, yet used keyboard for other things like thrusters. Then again, I'm not sure if this would feel good, seeing as I've never played or even heard of R-Type. That is, until now, of course.

The funny thing is I started this thred making out I knew what R-Type was but mere seconds before posting this I had to ask my brother to think of a popular space shooter... I've never played R-Type.
