Is it possible to connect to the internet yourself. Instead of waiting for the bloody telsta or optus etc. guys to come along and hook you up. I mean if it was free you could have free internet forever. Is there any manuals floating around the net that tell you how? Has anyone done this? I guess you would have to get a modem and some cables and connect it to the phone poll outside your house, but how exactly, for free?
well dsl uses higher frequencies on the phone line that human voices cant reach, so despite being different from the phone, its still hooked up through your phone company soooo no, you cant get it for free.
im not *exactly* sure how it works, but i think someone hooks up the ability to use those frequencies and that someone is your dsl provider. i also think the phone companies charge the dsl provider for doing this so thats why the dsl providers cost so much money, to make up the difference.
like i said, i have next to no clue how that works but free internet is unrealistic
I dunno, it's easy around my parts. All the new DSL/Cable packages come with free wireless routers, and almost no one turns on the security, so if you have a wifi card you might try that route.
Well the older sat. still required you to dial in somewhere, this was because the sat was for downstream only, which means all of your http requests and such were still handled by a dial in connection. I'm not sure if the newer ones are like this too, but I wonder if one of those little dishes could actually beam data to a set.

Basically all ISPs do now is provide a dial-in point for the greater network. You could conceivably set up everything you need yourself, but you still need a point of access. For most people that's a paid-for ISP, but if you know someone with their own server (which is itself provided a point of access either by a commercial ISP or another, larger server) that wouldn't mind you routing your connection through it, you could get free access.
But someone, somewhere, is still paying for access to the greater telecommunications network. That's why everything seems to terminate at either a university or a telco.
I think some company developed a satellite internet solution that sent the return channel on the satellite dish as well. I read about it in a computer magazine a year ago or two. It also required some software which was required to be installed by the actual provider.
Otherwise, Satellite is a one way communication.

Satellite internet is possible and is used in very remote areas where modems aren't viable. It's very expensive though and very latent, even at the speed of light the round trip for the signals takes a second or so.
For free internet, you could always try starting your own ISP. Build a new backbone cable system for the UK, run all the servers, routers and equipment you need, and pay the increased electricity bill for all that equipment. It all might end up a bit more expensive than just giving an ISP a monthly payment though.
It's quite nullified by the fact that the backbone operators won't give access to a private individual. And the cost to do so is unlikely to be worth it either (although bandwidth itself is cheaper)
It's kinda like old photocopying. Right now, it's fairly cheap, compared to the extremely high DIY price. But eventually, some piece of technology would just pop up which would allow any idiot with the right hardware (probably a modified mobile phone) to do it.
