I have recently discovered the fact that in every school I have been to on Oahu, there has always been at least one hatch on the roof, which gives access to the interior of the building. These hatches are fairly easy to get to, requiring teamwork sometimes, and a lot of upper body strength, but it can be done without ladders. In Hawaii it isn’t practical to have the school in one big building connected by halls, instead it is a series of multi-level buildings with open air walkways between them.

I made this find while free-running with some friends at our high school late at night, which evolved from our earlier "urban spelunking" as radix calls it. Taking a break we decided to try putting a couch on the third floor roof of the school's office. It was hard work getting to the top, and we soon found out that it would be near impossible to get a couch to the roof. But something else caught our eye, a roof hatch. It was unlocked, and it led into a janitor’s closet. Making our way out of the closet, we found that every third floor classroom hadn’t bothered locking their doors. We left that night without causing any damage.

But yesterday, while looking for new places to go free-running, we found another hatch at Pearl City Elementary cafetorium. In there was expensive walkie-talkies for the staff, computers, confiscated handheld videogames, expensive stage lights and... really fun wheelchairs.

Then, back at Aiea high, we found yet another hatch. This one into another janitors closet, which led to the band room. We had fun playing with the drums.

This prompted us to do an island wide search for more hatches; we have found at least one at every public school. I'm not sure if schools in other places have these, but if you're into urban spelunking or free-running you should definitely check.

Our school didn't have one. But it did have some rather flimsy skylights.

So, did you just happen to have a couch handy, or did you bring one with you purposefully?

edit: damn my spelling!

We found one on the side of the road some nights before, stuffed it in the car. My friend's mom told us to get rid of it...

Interesting, Ive climbed on the roof of the school right outside my house a few times, but then it isnt exactly hard, we used to loose loads of footballs in the middle courtyard. But with a long enough fishing net we could get them back again.

Its annoying though because the nosy people in the neighbourhood alway call the police when they see people on the roof, the coppers are as annoyed about it as we are and just suggest we dont play football in the school. Fair enough i supose.

We were wearing skii masks at first, but deemed it unnessicary. Plus, the cops would likely be 10x more suspicious in the unlikely event that we ever got caught. Now we wear skii masks sometimes as a precaution in high risk areas, until we see that there are no guards/security cameras. We snuck in to the local waterpark, I though for sure there would be at least one guard protecting 22-acres of nify waterslides, but no such thing. We have made a point to never break an entrance nor damage/steal property. All we get out of it is a couple of cheap thrills and bragging rights.
