How to use or be a tool
Posted 20th Dec 11, by Otter
I'm happy to show show off some of the tools you'll be using in Vagabond P.I. I've still got some work to do on a few of them, like the flashlight, but stuff is coming along pretty well. Here's a look at some of the tools you'll be using-

The fishing rod, as spoken of in an earlier post, is probably one of the most essential items in the game. You'll be able to sell the fish or fry them and eat them. If you haven't, look at the earlier post from a while back that talked about the mechanics of fishing in Vagabond P.I.

The shovel can come in handy in making money or solving cases. It uses up a bit of energy, like most other tools, and will allow you to dig in any spot. Usually there will be marks where stuff is buried. You will find relics that you can sell at the general store. Some cases may have you using the shovel, such as using it to dig through the rubble of a collapsed house.

The camera isn't really that useful of an item I'll admit, it's mainly just for a gimmick for time wasting. Simply select it from your inventory then press CTRL while walking around and it will take a .png screenshot.

The banjo is one of the collectable instruments that can be purchased at the shop in Kudzu Swamp. It was actually one of the first equippable 'tools' I finished. The banjo has 5 strings, so it can be played with 5 keys. There are a few optional cases that may require the banjo, but for the main part it's just somehting fun to play around with and collect.

The Acoustic Rythm Guitar is the newest addition. Although the guitar has 6 strings, it is play with 5 keys like the banjoes because it is played in rythm strums instead of individual notes.

Also, I've been working on a small tutorial level for the game. Although the game takes place in Kudzu Swamp, we first meet our humble unnamed hero living in his luxurious home (a train car), solving mysteries for the locals (train hopping hoboes). Anyway, this is a small tutorial you'll have to complete before the game really takes off. Just thought I'd show you guys a preview of what it's gonna look like.

I usually do best making stuff as a go, so making a tutorial level is a great way for me to finish some more game mechanics! Hope to get even more of the game introduction and story done soon!

This somehow reminds me of some of the older ambitious projects made with gf and knp. The art style I mean, especially the train.

Thats cool though, thats part of what made them fun, and since they were so much better than what I could do at the time it gave me something to strive towards. Lol

I'm liking the guitar and banjo, you could have a song that opens a secret cave or something.

Cant wait to see where this project goes!

Thanks Urb. I wasn't around in the gf and knp days to be honest I guess I missed the golden days of click. But it's still a great time to be developing indie games!

I'm thinking I may have a banjo minigame where you would reinact the famous dueling banjoes scene from 'Deliverance' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tqxzWdKKu8
Only it would be with two banjoes instead, and you would watch what bottun combination the other guy puts in, then you'd have to do it yourself. But that's just in the idea phase right now.
