A QUICK Decision
Posted 15th Aug 09, by MBK
I've decided that NO ANIMATION will be needed for this project.

It will be a sidescrolling platformer with TONS of characters that move around with simple AI but NO Animations, only still frame pictures of the creatures, and they won't need to be pixel perfect either, they can be rough-edged, poorly drawn, of any style, I don't care, it's for fun!

I believe this is the FASTEST and most effective way to regain the creative edge while quickly creating a few fun to play games.

Animation is such a time-consuming process, so why bother? Games can be fun without it.

Has anyone played Legends of Kesmai?
There's no animation in that game and I still like to play it. LoK has the advantage of being a mmorpg while this shall not be, but I usually just log in and play alone for an hour or less then quit until next time anyway.

So the first of these QTT project games will be a platformer without animations!

YAY!

No animation - are you sure this is the way to go? Even if it was just a 2 frame walking animation it would look 10 times better, and be 10 times more appealing surely?

You know, a protagonist would be useful. And perhaps a story? It's things like that that help with the creative process. Just giving us a random project without a title and say fill it in with no detail whatsoever, is a bit difficult to create stuff for. Other then that, interesting idea.

I'm filling it in too. It's just for fun, no expectations, just something to bring out some creative workflow while keeping things easy.

@Marko: Nope, no animation. That 2nd frame is twice the work, and for what? .. this isn't going to be something that looks fancy or polished anyway. It's only to bring back the ease and fun that creating games used to be. Besides, it's quick this way. So far I've already got a few animals I made in less than a few minutes the other day.

Besides, this way anyone can contribute if they like, even if they don't know how to animate, everyone can draw a picture, it might not be a masterpiece, but it will be a picture of something, and that's all I need, just some pictures. You don't need to be an artist for this, just willing to draw.

Well, does it matter what the protagonist is really?
It could be a frog or a cow or a hamster in a hamsterball or a zebra flying a kite, it doesn't matter much. I can come up with a quick story easy enough and it won't need to make sense. Or if you guys wanted to, you could think something up, but the thing about coming up with the story before the random art is that you'd need to draw things dependant upon the story, whereas I'd rather make up a story dependant upon the random drawings.

Thanks for the replies guys! .. Hope to see some random scribble-work from you guys!

....I think foregoing animation is a bad idea. I've seen klik games with no animation. Bad news, they are. If you get artists to help they'll surely be willing to at least make short animations, so if it's an effort to get people on board I'd drop the idea. Having no animation will just push people away I think.

I also fail to see how putting animationless characters in an already-decided-to-be platformer really gets creative juices flowing... O_o

But I do like the idea of churning out quick concepts to refine later! That's how I do it.

BUT THAT'S THE THING! No artists ever want to help!

So I'm asking Non-Artists to just toss some total crap sprites together for the hell of it and apparently even that is too much for people to do. Pathetic.

It's ok though, I'm making it anyway.
I have no time now and this is the easiest thing I can think to do. I will not animate it unless a bunch of artists help out and overwhelmingly demand that they can add animation. I don't expect that to happen though because I've never had even a single person ever join the team for any of my projects.
I don't really care anymore either.
Have little time so I won't be bull**it-ing much anymore either. Just not enough time.
I'll just be drawing crappy pictures mostly and toss them into a file, sprinkle in some AI and call it finished after 10 or so levels are made.

Not being funny or anything MBK but your attitude is not likely to endear you to anyone at the moment. Calling people pathetic because they wont help YOU with YOUR project is not the best way to go.

If you are serious about requesting help from people then stop being arrogant and actually ASK. You know use words like please and thank you.

If as you put it "I don't really care anymore either." then why should anyone else???

Please and Thank YOU

Ok, I do care. I just don't have time to wait for nobody to show up anymore. That's all I mean.
Sorry to sound like I've got an attitude, but maybe I do, (don't we all though?), you gotta admit that it's a really simple task. It's about the easiest thing I could think up and still noone was joining. Matthew Wiese was kind enough to sign up now though, and I think a few others may like how fun and simple this is as well.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings or something.
I don't mean to be a bad guy, and I'm not in rl, even if it may sound that way through the interwebs.

Did you wish to join in or did you just stop by to critique my attitude?

Please and Thank You!
Join in, it's doodling, that's all it is.

Did you ever doodle in school while a boring teacher went on and on without ever actually teaching anything? Well?

Come come, join the fun, come one come all to the circus of draw! Scribble scribble doodly doo, if it ends up being good it'll help TDC too!
