Story Help needed
Posted 15th Feb 10, by ILIKESCIFI Games

Ok, I know this is not a usual post, but I am really stuck in my head/creativity/... and I thought one of you might have an idea. Here is how it is:

IŽve got 3 frames which explain the beginning. In the end the character is at this spacestation from where he can travel to different levels (thats the plan by now...)
What follows is, that the player (Eli) gets his abilities one after another (ball, fire, telekinesis,...i think you know them by now).

The Problem: I dont want to make a simple: level 1 - he gets the ball level 2 - he gets the fire abb. and so on. I need a more delicate solution here. If i use the classic level thing, i need a nice level select screen and i really dont know how it should work like.

The Second Problem: The story has changed so much, that i dont know any explanations WHY eli is able to turn into a heavy ball, or why there is fire coming of his feet. I am really, really ,really lost (and i didnt see it).

Some facts: the game starts in 1977, but in a kind of parallel 1977 (there are space stations). Eli is STILL looking for his brother. he gets 5 abilities (can turn into a heavy ball - whatever that ball is, he can float through air, he can burn, he can use telekinesis and he can run very fast).

Maybe one of you has an idea. Thx already for your help!

Jot

ps:btw, your BET testing help was fantastic! I solved 10 bugs at least, which i did not see. very cool work guys!

Some abilities can open more paths in previous levels: for example on first level you see the cannon, but you can't use it untill you get the "ball" ability. After using the cannon - you transported to other level.
Some abilities you can use as a weapon: with fire-feet you can kill some Boss and get important quest item.
The idea is simple: you can return to past levels and find another ways to go with new abilities. Look for PS2-game "Okami" - good gameplay reference for you.

Level selection: Easy. Teleporter tubes ala star trek that lead to different areas. Tubes are marked 1-8(or nuber of levels).

Power explanations: You need one?... Okay, okay. Meteors explain everything. Ever watch "Meteorman"?

I did like your first story though, but since you added a space station, there's only one logical explanation. The station is their home. The humans are here to settle on the Earth. During a routine space walk, a surprise meteor shower strikes the station. At the center is a van sized meteor. Eli and his brother race for the protective covering of the shield ala fantastic four. Eli gets in the shield, at the same time the meteor does. As the shield closes, the meteor is severed, half slamming into Eli, the other into his little brother. His brother's half is bounced of the shield and ricocheted to plunge into the atmosphere. Eli wakes up in med bay, miraculously whole, with these strange new, yet weak powers. The doctor says that collection of large chunks of the meteor will enhance these. Having no doubt that his brother survived, he heads off for the teleporter chamber.

Add something about being on the lookout for a nefarious organization collecting meteor samples and your set. Or better yet, have them like the Metroid space pirates. And, they collected the little brother for study. See? Meteors explain everything. You could go with cosmic rays too, but that's a bit much I think. Anyways, what do ya think?

I like the pipe idea (why did i put pipes in the game if not use it like that!?)! I also thought about meteors (or more of falling stars---like "wishing stars"...so Eli is able to whish himself round, or light, or burning...

Hehehe Ive seen meteorman..what a GREAT movie the story has some sweet points which I think I can think about. IŽll see. You love storys dont you!? Pretty good in that, man.

I can't help you in the story department but I really wanted to comment on your beta (which I downloaded awhile back). I really like the unique artistic style you've developed for this game and think you're onto something great here.

Some parts of the game, specifically the silhouette portion, remind me a print I recently picked up on a trip to North Carolina. The artist's name is Brian Mashburn and he lives in Asheville. Here's some of his oil work:

http://brianmashburnart.com/gallery/oil-on-canvas/

It's not what you might consider "uplifting" work and the small thumbnails make it difficult to appreciate the detail he's put into each piece. But, I really liked the detail and atmosphere of his work. The composition "Industricitis" is the piece that specifically reminds me of Pitiri.

Keep up the great work!
