BETATESTING
Posted 22nd Sep 09, by ILIKESCIFI Games
Ok, so here is how it is:

I´m a little late, I know. It´s not the 18th of september but at least it still is september. Here is a very very very tiny view on the game Pitiri for you guys to play!

First I wanted to keep the first Beta test secret (I´m a little shy ) But this forum rocks a lot, so I thought, maybe you are interested in beta testing one first level.

You can get the thing here:

www.ilikescifi.com/pitiri/pitiri_beta.rar

There´s a textfile in it(*.doc), that should explain pretty everything.

Some things I forget to put into the textfile:

There are some placeholders still in there
The file is pretty big (40mb), dont know why
The textfile is 2 pages. It would be just awesome if you could not only play, but also test the game, and fill out the form I put on the 2nd page.

So this should be it. I am very proud present you the first Level of Pitiri.

I really like the feel of it so far, but a couple of things...

Are you resizing the window? I mean, to me the graphics seemed slightly stretched? I think it would look nicer windowed and to the original sizes if this is the case.

Also sometimes the graphics seemed glitchy. Like when I used the electric power under water (which had nice atmosphere btw )

Also like the scratchy aged look of it all.

I'll just give some feedback here since it's the most convenient way.

- Main menu: pressing left and right to select an option was not obvious - I was confused as it seemed up/down arrows would be the way to select, but then I relised he was running on the world. Maybe you could allow for up/down alongside left/right arrows.

- Perhaps some in-game control hints, I know you can read it in the file - but you can't rely on that (most gamers don't like reading files when they can play a game instead).

- It might be nice to fade the music in and out when you go into/out of the water.

- Might make sense if the fire goes out when you go in the water.

- I really liked your graphical style. Everything looked great.

- Perhaps the water is a little too dark?

- The sound effects were pleasant

- I liked the radial menu

- Music was great

- The game ran fine on my system. (NVIDIA 9600 GSO graphic card)

yeah it was okay, I just found it hard to see objects like the box at the bottom of the pond.

The beta was quite nice. I like the engine, the look and feel of the game. Reminded me in some kind of oldschool typical 2d pc games. But for me, it looked like you've focused a lot on physics and stuff and only a little on actual gameplay (or you don't wanna show it).

Here some thoughts about improvements.
- Improve main menu controls
As alastair said, make it controllable by up/down. The player doesn't care about the planet. That's eye candy. Don't rely the controls on that! Additionally, make the controls instant. I tap the button and I wanna select stuff. Again, I don't care about what the planet does.

- Give the player some kind of interface. Most games nowadays tend to minimize the interface or don't have any displays at all. This is good, if the gameplay doesn't rely on that. Your game does! Maybe that's work-in-progress, but just wanted to say it.

- Make the powers more unique. I think just adding an effect to the player is not what the player wants. Make him throw fireballs, give him some kind of gravity-gun etc so you can throw rocks at enemies.

- Do not copy Braid. I know this game is extremely stylish etc, but that's the main problem with such a unique style: if you copy it, make it better or give it your own unique touch! A bad copy will always be seen as a bad copy, no matter how good it would be on it's own. It will always be compared to the original and Braid had some top notch designers (I saw the early version of it before it got pimped and it was laughable^^).

However, I hope you take the critique not personal. I've tried to be constuctive, because I think this project has lots of potential! Keep it up!
