Getting down the perspective and designing a Level Editor
Posted 24th Oct 12, by Chloe Sagal
what up jerks?

So I was hoping to have more finished by tonight but I'm falling asleep, long story. At least I did a few things.

I started planning out which perspective I was going to go with so I drew up a few:

I still feel the 3/4ths view is restrictive on the potential entrances to the house so that one is out the windows that you can't see in it.

Planometric is kind of cool, though I feel it forces the perspective of the characters to a certain angle, I would rather have as much depth into the character design as possible, I feel it's necessary for having some kind of feeling in the game, so this one was a no-go. However, I do like that you can see a lot more of the playing field.

Isometric is cool, easier than the 3/4ths (assuming I'd be doing 8-directions anyways), but sadly I feel like going with this one wouldn't be the most original (screw you).

Oblique projection is a new one to me, the only game I know that uses it is earthbound, so naturally I'm inclined to go slightly against the grain. While unlike planometric and isometric having to only do one direction of a texture, I think it's nothing to worry too much about. The one issue I find is that the angle is kind of restrictive, and doesn't allow you to see into smaller areas very well like isometric and planometric, but I think I can come up with some creative solutions to that.

So I whipped up some quick textures and threw them together

The second one having the front cut away to make the inside visible, obviously that's similar to how it would look if the player were in it.

So, my next goal is to finish up a level editor. I've got a great start on it, and the design should make it fairly intuitive, though I'm having a wee bit of trouble wrapping my head around wall placement. I would like to be able to create the images above in a procedural fasion, so i don't have to be clicking back and fourth between different situations of the same texture.

However, I have come up with a plan to make the textures not as monotonous, and vary them up, procedurally. I'm not to crazy about the floor textures I've drawn, and this idea should make it easy to switch out textures quickly without hassle.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have that done if I can get some sleep. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
