stupid trees
Posted 23rd Feb 09, by Chloe Sagal
i spent the entire day drawing up finalized background. im planning on haveing one of those multiple layered scrolly things with the trees, and ive finished the first layer. 2 more layers to go alright!! i wouldve posted a screenshot, but my print screen button aint working, and besides id rather show off the finished one.

btw, if anyone knows how to code that scrolly layered background thing, thatd be pretty cool if youd clue me in, that one might take me a while.

i also kind of got the ladder working, but it still feels terrible and sucks the player into a virtual world of ladder gravity that cannot be escaped unless bad things happen.

"scrolly layered background thing"

Do you mean parallax scrolling? It's actually really simple. I use it in my game aswell...so here's how to do it:

-put each tree "set" on it's different layer (to access layer toolbar press ctrl+K)
-then highlight each layer and change the X and Y coefficients (in properties toolbar)

A number lower than 1 will scroll slower, a number higher will scroll faster...I think. It might be the other way around. Good Luck!

i just spent like an hour searching through the articles to find a how to do that, and yours was way simpler. although it slows it down like crazy. i might have to make the level smaller... but thanks alot!

ugh, when you bring out the binoculars it totally kills it. the frame rate goes down to 1.

really? Slows Down! It shouldn't slow the game down at all...

well the frame size is 5120 pixels wide... and i was using quick backdrops which didnt help. i replaced them with regular backdrops and it works fine, but the binoculars still shoot the framrate down to about 23.

Mine always stays at 50 FPS, with a 1260 X 980 screen size and a gigantic motif quick backdrop as big as the screen.

its problably just the way my engine is set up. what resolution are you using? im at 640x480, id turn it down but then id have to redraw the backgrounds so they work up and down (i tried it, it didn't look pretty.)

thats because im retarded and changed both the x and y things. i set the resolution to 320x240 and decreased the size of the binoculars and the frame rate stays the same.
thanks so much, sorry im kind of dumb.
