How do YOU "spell" challenge?
Posted 3rd Jan 12, by Del Duio
At long last, these total pain in the ass enemies are finished!

These alien wizards (not their actual name) cast 4 different types of enemy buff spells and a single, devastating offensive spell. I made them so that they each have an editiable off screen 'spell book' (at design time) which they draw magic from. This means that if I want a wizard in one room to have 5 speed boost spells and nothing else I can do that. Or if I want another one to have nothing but HP buffs and an offensive spell I can do that too.

Casting any spell from its 'spell book' removes the spell, meaning eventually they WILL cast every known spell at random until they're completely out of spell charges. Kind of like how old D&D rules worked with memorized spells and charges and etc.

Anyhow, these guys will randomly select an enemy in the room other than themselves for casting buffs. All the buffs stack too. If you've killed every other enemy in the room, the wizard's casting rate goes way up and they will target themselves and become especially dangerous. For the offensive spell, it hones in on Rovert and aside from one hard to get method to protect yourself vs. it, you'll have to run out of the room else you'll get nailed and take some hefty damage from both your HP and PP meters.

As you can see from the screenshot adding one or two (or more!) of these guys can greatly increase a room's challenge factor. I might even slap one of these guys in a future boss's room. Wouldn't that be something!

Thanks for the offers guys, right now I'm doing about 90% of the testing and trust me I find A LOT all the time. Luckily I'm able to make the fixes or changes as needed. When I get the latest version of the game ready for testing (takes about 1-2 months) I have about 5 guys who help with design who then test it further and the process works pretty well.
