Game of the Week Winner

Edited By viva/volt on 7/31/2010

For Christmas Competition.

In the game you play as an unwilling hero, thrown into a quest to stop a villain from inflicting eternal winter upon the lands.

Features: Original Soundtrack, incredible amounts of sarcasm, 3 guns each with 3 power levels each, 7 levels and 4 bosses and hordes of evil enemies... No really.

This game is really not about the story, in all honesty, it's about the gameplay.

All controls etc. explained in readme and are changeable via the config application. Supports joysticks too .

The music is by Tim.

It's obviously heavily inspired by Cavestory and The Underside, not claiming any originality here.

Looks really cool, though it runs to slow for my taste to be playable which is a shame.

Posted by viva/volt 4th January, 2008

I think it's because I ended up with too many layers :\

The engine needs some work too, I hate not being able to press jump+run+right arrow at the same time. (jump+run+left arrow works fine though)

Is there some way that you can make a... LITE version of this game? I would much rather play this game with a single background layer and have it run well, than have ten layers of complexity and not be able to get halfway through a level. Sometimes you have to sacrifice some icing to save the cake

Posted by viva/volt 6th January, 2008

I'm planning on removing 4 layers and changing parallax to bg sys boxes tomorrow.

X_sheep: Err, works fine on my keyboard & computer. I did have the same problem on my dad's, it's something about the right and left arrow keys and I don't think it's actually my fault.

4 layers should be manageable...

I'd suggest that you refrain from having like 5 or more "always" events and instead put them in only 1 or 2 events. Also, make all objects "half inactive" until you come near them in the game, and perhaps make them "load on request" too. Put box collission on all sprites and backgrounds that do not use collission, that should also matter a bit I believe.

just a quick question: are all the animations from the main character pixel-for-pixel exactly like the ones in the underside?

...WHAT? TWO! I voted freakin FOUR out of five!

Posted by viva/volt 6th January, 2008

Dustin: Yeah, I believe I've mentioned that a couple of times now. I don't want a flame war or anything.

Vince: firstly lol, secondly I'm doing all that

I have a small problem now, the background system boxes are making the game run slower than before... Which means using them in this is pointless now. I'll see if hiding the layers stops any lag, if so I'll release a version with that as an option.

EDIT: That didn't work... Great. Looks like you'll need a super computer to run this until HWA is done... I'm too tired to try something else atm, maybe tomorrow if you're all lucky.

I think this is so much more original than the underside

Did you try converting your application to 32,000 colors instead of 16 million? That helps a LOT, and usually makes a minimal (if any) noticable effect on the graphic quality.

Posted by viva/volt 6th January, 2008

Hmm no I'll try that later... Thanks for the suggestion. I could completely omit the parallax backgrounds, but that takes time since there is some code relating to objects being moved to layers and such.

Yeah, Bital was suppose to build an enormous spring to get you out of the caves, but Tim and Ben changed the script. Besides its more fun to try to figure out how the hell he FELL from the caves to the Mountain Top Lab.

EDIT: The guy in the cage is called (or was when I wrote the script) Bital. That might make what I said less confusing.

This game has mediocre, un-proffesional graphics and plays like shiit. It lags like hell and the gameplay completely sucks, the whole game just feels pasted together. I dunno why everyone's kissing your ass about it, it's nothing compared to CS or The Underside. Nice try.

People have to start rating these games properly, if this get's fucking five stars, what do actual good games like Cave Story and AGWAK get?

Posted by Tim 8th January, 2008

They get five, and shut up?

Posted by 8th January, 2008
Rated :

Yeah but it's a bad game, how can anyone in their right minds give it five stars?

Posted by Tim 8th January, 2008
Rated :

Games aren't to be compared against one another, otherwise nothing here would get over 3 stars since JRPG, AGwaK, ED, etc.

It's down to opinion, be it biased or not. In your opinion this game is bad because it somewhat takes the mick out of TU and CS, being somewhat of a parody of the two. If you can't see past that then that's up to you.

Seeing as the graphics are pretty much just like TU anyway. Since you claim it lagged for you, you clearly haven't experienced the entirity of the gameplay, so you cannot judge it accountably.

The lag, at the moment, is not curable. When HWA comes out, this may well fix the problem. But apart from those that kiss pod's ass, the majority of people enjoyed it.

The game isn't serious, either. It was made for a competition in about 3 weeks, ffs! So give it a rest, will you?

Ragathon, stop talking if you don't come with constructive criticism. "I don't like it", "I don't like the graphics" or "I don't like the gameplay" would have been enough, as all three ARE actually quite decent, especially for a game made in just a month.

That's not true. Anything that affects the experience of the game can be used for it or against it. I've played this game on very good machines (quad 3GHz 2gigs ram) and lag still makes it extrememly slow. This takes away from the enjoyment of the game, so it's very important.

On the other hand, I haven't reviewed this game because the lag alone would sink this games score by two or three points. I'm still waiting for a "fixed" version.

Tim, I don't dislike the game because it's a rip-off, I dislike the game because the gameplay is horrible. If I disliked the game because it was a rip-off, that would also result in dislike of The Underside, a game I have immense liking for.

So games are rated for effort and not quality?
Thats absolutely stupid.

Is there any way to turn the blood off? It doesn't match the style at all...

Posted by viva/volt 9th January, 2008

I still don't get why it runs fine on my pc but not good at all on better machines :S I only have a 2.16ghz Dual Core and 2gb of RAM.

I'll try and sort something out :\

Shroomlock, my pc is 3.6GHZ Quad Core, 6gb RAM, and there's no problems whatsoever with any click game - nor does it use over 3% of one cpu core when I set the affinity to one core.

I think the problem lies with your computer there Shroomlock, not the game... because if you get lag on that kind of machine, that's just plain rediculous!!!

Posted by viva/volt 9th January, 2008

I'm still going to try to speed it up at some stage... But for now I think you can afford to skip over this game .

Oh and Tim, it's ridiculous

the lag is pretty much curable, i left a comment on how to fix it on another website, but yeah, people who hate this game are people who 'kiss my ass' and not people who 'actually can't play the game because it's too slow.' obviously everyone elses computers are lying and welp, what we've got right here is the perfect game!

like i said on other websites, it doesn't come off as a "parody" of cave story or the underside because it acknowledges neither. the underside may look like cave story, but it doesn't have the same directory structure, scripting system, sound file names, etc. as cave story. this game is such a blatant copy of the underside, which would be fine by me if you guys didn't have such a poor attitude about it, especially by going as far as attacking me and my game where it's completely unwarranted. if you're gonna steal so blatantly from another author, and you're not going to acknowledge it, then the least you can do is treat them with respect.

p.s. if you're going to be rating your own team's games, you should try to make sure your ratings aren't the highest ones.

Hehe

"if you're gonna steal so blatantly from another author, and you're not going to acknowledge it"

Ok, hold up. So if Ben has the same directory structure, scripting system or sound file names as another game... that means it's ok to copy everything else? Just so long as the not so obvious stuff isn't the same, that makes it fine to copy? That doesn't make a great deal of sense to me...

The game credits the Underside and Cave Story, IN the credits. We completely acknowledge that. Nextly, the reason that we are 'attacking' you (your dominions, at least - who seem to speak for you sometimes), is simply us defending ourselves against this massive controversy that your little fanbase had started! Saying stuff like OMG SUCH A RIP-OFF OF TU etc... and yeah, it is?

It was also made in like 3 weeks, for an xmas competition. It wasn't REALLY MADE for public release, initially! It was to put the most effort into the game, in order to make the biggest impression on the competition judges and thus stand a good chance of winning the Xmas comp. It was aimed at the judges, not the entire public eye. I think we need to remember that really, and take this as a compliment, as you have obviously inspired many people with The Underside - and this inspiration has been clearly shown in games, such as this.

We're not attacking you Pod, we're defending ourselves against the people that started personally attacking Ben for having produced this game... because it was like TU and CS.

edit: Oh and p.s. Unfortunately, Pixeltheif voted it 5 stars... rendering what you said invalid. But point taken, 'thanks'.

Argh please... Just everyone stop talking about this game, I know how to fix the lag I'll get around to it (I know it's there, just don't see why I don't get it). I'm sorry I ripped you off so much Pod, it honestly while making it didn't feel like it was (but I can of course see the exact parts that are... Exactly the same.)

I'll add info about it being the same as TU if it makes you happy Pod? I have at no point attacked you (AFAIK?) and I have treated you with respect (again AFAIK) because I do respect you and the games you make.

It is all down to me, because it's my fault that I didn't openly acknowledge influence from TU except in the credits (which obviously no-one reached because of lag).

(If anyone got there, there is a cutscene in the game where the character falls down a hole from a bridge in the exact same way as in TU and before he falls he says "this strikes me as unoriginal" if anyone cares... lol)

I'd honestly prefer if you didn't just bite back at Pod so fast Tim when he has legitimate points. Though it's nice to have you on my side . Though I agree we're not trying to attack people here, right?

There's just so many people that always take things too far, looking for fights on the internet.. it's hard not to turn in to one yourself!

I live by the resolution "Can't we all just get along?"

I also hate injustice, so I'll defend what I think is right... who ever is involved, regardless of who it is.

If people didn't just fling such ignorant and comments and accusations at us on behalf of others, that'd be a nice start. If someone actually deserves it, then fair enough, but I don't think anyone should deserve that sort of thing.

I'd also appreciate it if your fan ppl didn't send abusive emails, too. Ok, granted, you can't control what people do.. but y'know :\

Benny, I didn't mean to sound like I was nagging about the slow-down issue. I really wouldn't have mentioned it at all if I didn't think this was a really good game. It was only important to me because I thought that it was probably some small overlooked option that was causing it to run slower than it should.

Regardless, you clearly put effort into this game and it shows. I'll look forward to when I get to play it the way it was meant to be played.

Posted by viva/volt 9th January, 2008

I wasn't getting annoyed or anything, I'm just working on other things etc. right now. I'll poke around with different check-boxes and that at some stage.

God I hope you're not including me in the group of people yelling "TU RIPOFF!" I don't give a fuck about this game I was curious about the animations.

I played it for 5 minutes, it was alright, didn't run slow for me, humor was grating and I thought I spotted a companion cube reference so I closed it

you can try to put any spin on it you want, tim, but the fact is that i don't have "fan people," and have not made any mention of this game on my website. if people are sending you emails about it (which is news to me), it's because they themselves legimitately think the same thing i do, and not because i've told them to say anything. and your excuse that it's okay to steal things because the game wasn't intended for the public (even though it was... released publicly on your site?) doesn't even begin to make sense, and doesn't morally justify a thing. benny has stated in countless places that TU was a big influence on the game, i don't understand why it's such a hard pill for you of all people to swallow? the bottom line is if people dislike your game, it's because they dislike your game, and not because i've brainwashed them in any sort of way, so it'd be nice if you'd stop justifying things by throwing my name around. thanks!

I don't think you quite got what I meant Pod..

I know you didn't ask people to email me, for starters. They just have, that's all. I'm saying that it's those people that send things like that, and put us on the defensive.

It's not a hard pill for me to swallow at ALL!? I've been saying that he has credited you for being such a huge influence!

This 'rukus' isn't against you, Pod, it's against those of whom completely denied any interest in the game because it resembled TU, then spoke abusively about it and at us, for it doing so.

*sighhhhh*

Also, to say that this is a rip-off of Underside is crazy, when Underside is a rip-off of Cave Story...you can't copy a copy. It's very good, and I don't think its Cave Story-feel detracted from the gameplay at all.

There is one thing you need to fix though--when you save, you need to save the weapon progress as well...it was too easy to just kill everyone, save, then kill myself, and repeat in order to ugrade the weapon to full power. Other than that, awesome game.

This is what you get when you use TGF/MMF/MMF2.
ESPECIALLY in MMF2.

I personally went over to BlitzMAX coding.

Here is why your project laggs, probably.

The "object" counter is probably around.. 300~500 all the time, am i right ?

So do everything you can to lower it down to 200~
Don't use 1 million counters when you can just replace it by 1 extension object or Values for the objects.

Make sure objects really destroy when you won't ever see them again.

etc etc.

If you are using MMF2, this is the reason to your lagg.

A great game to be sure. But the run button makes things needlessly convoluted - if there's no benefit to walking and no penalty for running, you should just always run.

In addition, the part where you have to destroy the red blocks to advance while keeping the blue ones alive is EXTREMELY frustrating if you have an upgraded shard gun. As a matter of fact, upgrading the guns makes them more DANGEROUS to you, the user.

...and CHRIST, you need to put save points more often. Shit. I am really fucking pissed off at this game right now.

I loved playing this game, and the script had me LOLing all the way through. There is one part that severly pissed me off though.

And that was using the rockets to propel myself to get to a switch. I was using a joypad to play and in order to fly up I had to Hold Jump, and Fire which was a bit ridiculous, and if I wanted to run I had to hold 3 buttons.

But other then that I really enjoyed the game. Even though I haven't beaten it yet.

Also I experienced close to 0 lag. I just made sure the window size was smaller. That helped out a lot.
