New video footage, plus info on character stats
Posted 10th Jan 11, by HitmanN
Here's a new video I put together, again in a bit of a hurry. Some new stuff here too, but mostly just improvements upon the old.

Some new enemies, a new spell, revisioned staff attacks, surprise enemy spawns, new decorations...

Ah, heck, just watch it if you're interested. xP

Don't mind the crappy chest at the end of the trailer. They can sometimes have really good stuff too. That one just happened to have potions and money only. xP

Full-screen view recommended. It's supposed to be played in full-screen or big window anyway.

Info: Stats

Strange, I thought I made an entry about these already, but I guess I didn't. Anyways, I'll go over these briefly. In Twisted Tower, you have four stats for the character. ATK, DEF, MGC and SPD. You can probably guess what these are and what they do, but to summarize:

* ATK (Attack) influences amount of damage dealt with physical attacks (like swords and bows).
* DEF (Defense) decreases damage from physical enemy attacks and increases Maximum HP.
* MGC (Magic) influences damage, speed and effectiveness of spells, as well as increases Maximum MP.
* SPD (Speed) determines how fast you can run, how high you can jump, and how rapidly you can shoot with a bow.

(The above stats may have additional benefits to them eventually.)

And then, quite obviously:

* HP (Hit Points) When you take damage, HP goes down. When it reaches zero, you're defeated and have to start from last checkpoint or save.
* MP (Magic Points) Casting spells costs MP. If MP reaches 0, you can only cast spells that don't cost MP to be cast (very basic spells).
* EXP (Experience) Defeat enemies to gain Experience. When you have enough Experience, your character's Level goes up by 1 and some stats will increase.
* LV (Level) The higher your character's level, the stronger they are overall. Level also affects quality of loot from enemies slightly.

(HP and MP can be restored in variety of ways.)

Character Growth

When you level up, two of the four skill stats will increase. Which ones, is up to what you do, and what equipment you use. Swinging swords all day long will likely increase ATK, taking damage constantly increases DEF, casting spells increases MGC and jumping and using bows increases SPD. In addition to activities, weapons have alignments towards two skills. If you using melee weapons and magic, you might want to use a staff, which has an alignment for DEF and MGC. Each enemy you finish off with the staff will contribute extra experience for the two alignment stats.

Also, leveling up increases Maximum HP and Maximum MP, and if DEF increases at the same time, then Maximum HP increases more than otherwise. Same thing with Max MP and MGC.

The experience you have gathered for each of the four stats is not visible, so it's usually best to keep doing and using the things that increase the stat you want to increase, to make sure it does happen. However, when you level up, the stats that didn't increase are not reset. This is so that all stats do eventually increase, but by focusing on specific stats, you can make them increase more often than others.

Thus, you can choose whether you want to plan how to build your character, or if you just want to do whatever you feel like doing. Either way, the stats you are already favoring will grow stronger. It's similar to how leveling up skills in Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion happens.

Eventually it's my intention to add some sort of specialties or perks you can choose every once in a while (like every 5 levels or so), from a range of options. Things such as weapon proficiencies, HP or MP regeneration (or similar), better loot, etc. You can use them to bolster strengths or fix weaknesses, or just to help define your character's role to your liking.

Aside from the above things, any other bonuses come with equipment you find or buy, so to build a strong character, you must keep exploring the levels.

That's all for today.

As expected, it looks great ^^. I like the way you're doing stats increase.

Wow! I especially like the camera movement and the feel of the combat. I'd recommend that you choose some better sound effects (those are probably placeholders now..?) and perhaps the background "bricks" could use some more variety. Adding an extra layer of foliage and some lighting effects would put a great amount of polish on this. Looking great so far!

Thanks for the comments y'all.

nim:
Some of the sound effects are placeholders, yes. If there's any you dislike or find inappropriate to the situation, just let me know. I'll look into the sounds better down the line. Also, pretty much all of your suggestions are something I've been at least considering. Not sure about any 'foliage' for the tower theme, but there definitely needs to be more stuff on the ground and in the background.
