Project Overview
I got some nice remarks on the Bomb Squad prototype I submitted the other day, so i'm going ahead and making a full game out of it. For those of you who didn't see it, it was pretty simple. I'm going ahead and learning some new tricks for this full version - Instead of using the tiny graphics i'm using Ray's smooth scrolling tutorial to create a pretty nice scrolling interface. The screenshots should give you a pretty good idea.

The goal is simple. On each level, you must locate and disarm all of the bombs present. If you run out of time, you lose. All of the screenshots below are from the Tutorial level, so don't expect the entire game to look like that. Each level will have the basic key elements (doors, bomb sites, guards, etc) but they'll also have a special touch. One level the power has been cut so you have to use nightvision the whole time. Another level takes place in a warehouse, and you can run down baddies with a forklift. Some levels may even include hostages.

Keyboard controls are the Arrow keys, Ctrl and Shift. Ctrl is the 'fire weapon' key, and Shift is the 'activate' key. Tapping shift will cycle through your weapon selections. Holding it while standing on a bomb site allows you to disarm the bomb. There will also be switches and various other activation items.

You DO have hitpoints in this version, but they won't be terribly useful. Most traps will still rip you apart in a few seconds. Gunshots will almost always be fatal. You also have limited ammo, so you have to watch your fire. While your weapons are pretty effective, this isn't a shooter, it's a Strategy/Action game. Your racing against the clock.

Your weapons include a pistol (fast firing), a rifle (big round) and a shotgun (spread shot).

BOMB DISARMING. I'm pretty happy about this. Instead of just standing there and holding SHIFT while you disarm it, i've added a little sub-challenge. If you look at Screenshot 3, you can see the two left-hand gauges lit up. The Arrow one is a direction key you have to hold.. the green bar is a progress bar. While holding SHIFT, the game will pop up an arrow. You have to hold that arrow key AND shift to fill the bar up. If you release the arrow key (or it changes on you >.> the bar slowly decreases until you get the right key. Releasing SHIFT at any time means you have to start over. They can be pretty tricky to disarm, but it does a good job of adding a bit of realism - Bomb defusal requires focus and skill. And if your going to get anything disarmed in Bomb Squad, your going to need both.

There will be a fair amount of variety in the levels, to keep it from getting terribly repetative. A barrage of traps and obstructions await you in the game. Security cameras are line of sight detectors - step in their path and you'll set off the alarms. When the alarms are activated, security doors won't open - this almost always means you have to backtrack to shutdown the alarm before you can continue.

I'm still looking for ideas for levels, traps, and just about everything. I'm winging the design as I go and making notes of the ideas I have. Let me know what you think.
