Project Overview
Preview SpongeBob SquarePants: The Arcade Game

A side scrolling beat em up in the style of Konami's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & The Simpsons arcade game.

Project was started on 11th March 2009.
All graphics are original, both drawn and animated by myself.

A few background props / artwork have been ripped directly from the Nickelodeon TV show of the same name.

The game includes a large cast of characters from the show including some designed specifically for the game (the bad guys in the screenshot for example).
While 99% of them will NOT be playable they will make appearences in the background as enemies or bosses.

This project will use a new beat em up engine (not the now dated TMNT Engine).

Doing a little research
Posted 7th Dec 09, by Jason Orme 3 Comments
I've spent the past week or so on my Mame cabinet playing loads of arcade games from the early 90's.

When creating my TMNT engine I found a pattern to how the game was made compared to other beat em ups so I thought i'd study a few more games.

The idea is to find all the things that I like in those games and add them while also finding a balance or system.

So, I need to know at what point to introduce a big enemy, when is it right to then have 2 or even 3 of them together. How to make the levels more exciting and action packed.
I'm also studying the length of levels and checking at what point does the game bore me to work around it.

So there is alittle bit of a pause at the moment with work, but I did get alot of work done in the past month (90% of the work infact, not bad considering the project was started in March).

If you have any suggestions, things you would like to see or just ideas then please don't hesitate to post.

HUD & Enemy A.I

I've created the player HUD, modified from Asterix Arcade Game.

I've done alot more coding (improving my skills and learning new tricks as I go).

Enemies will alternate their focus when in 2 player mode, making sure both players are under-attack and that one player isn't being mobbed.

When playing single player, player 2 can enter at any point. Upon doing this enemies will then know to focus on 2 players.

All in all progress is going great and for once i'm actually enjoying myself.
2 Player Co-Op
Posted 22nd Nov 09, by Jason Orme 6 Comments
Not only will be able to play as SpongeBob, but as a first for me you will be able to choose from 2 playable characters, Patrick being the other.

As another first for me, you will be able to play with a friend in 2 player co-op.

Its all tested and working 100%.

A couple of bosses have been drawn up too, although I won't be posting any pictures of them this early.
