Project Overview
Preview Bunny Mage is a 2D Platformer Adventure game (you could say Metroidvania, but it's not quite that) I started working on for Peblo's competition. I've had the idea for this style of a game for a while but I was always too lazy to start working on it.
This competition sparked me to start making it, and so I did.

The story begins with a young bunny mage that I haven't given a name yet. In this game, mages can be considered bounty hunters. So even if a character was dressed like a ninja, he could still be a mage. The protagonist bunny seeks to kill the notorious Bad Panda. (cameo*)

The storyline is very thin at the moment as I'm working mostly on the Engine itself and the graphics. I'll be spriting all of the graphics myself and it's taking loads of time. I want the game to look good so I won't stop improving the sprites till I'm satisfied.

Because of the short time I have to work on this game for the contest I'll keep adding locations to the world map over the timespan of the contest. So with every round of the contest a new version will be released with new places to visit, new items to get, new people to talk to, new quests to fulfill, etc. Even if I get eliminated from the contest I'll keep working on this methinks. We'll see. x)

This is the map screen as it looks now, I'll update this screen as I update the game itself.

More info/vids/screens coming soon.

Sneek Peek demo.
Posted 14th Aug 08, by Richard. L 1 Comment
So i made it through the first round of the competition. The game as it stands now looks more like a shiny platformer. I'm going to try and change that and get a real nice RPG feel in there.

If anyone wants to check out the competition entry you can find the demo here: http://kokuryuu.com/random/Bunny.exe
Not really worth posting in the downloads section, but you can play around with it.

Update
The worldmap has been increased in size. It used to be a map that just filled the screen and you could navigate it with a cursor, jumping from level to level. This cursor has been deleted and in it's place comes a small version of your character. You'll be able to walk the world in a way that could be described as chrono trigger-ish. You'll be able to sail the seas (when you have a boat) and explore this map freely.

Here's a little w.i.p screen of the fireball magic:

I'm not too happy with the characters animations, I'll probably redo the sprite later.

As for the next demo and my entry for this round in the 'tourey', I'll probably drop you off somewhere on the world map nearby a dungeon with a nice collection of magic, so you can see various magic and monsters in action. Don't think i can include anything of a storyline yet. I'll be focussing more on the competition's theme, 'the arts'. lol, ima make some artz then.

I'll shut my mouth now and go back to work.
See ya. ;p

Layer switching.

One of MMF2's coolest features must be layers. Bunny Mage will make good use of it. When you enter a house/cave/room you will actually be positioned on another layer, the layer with the contents of the structure you're entering. This is inspired by the old monsterworld series on the sega systems.
I had some idea's to do this in MMF1.5 but I'm not really a coder so i waited for MMF2. I'm really happy with the result and I'm anxious to see what kind of cool dungeons i can make with this. Imagine Zelda, with the locked doors and stuff, but now in side scrolling form. =D
The bringer of screenshots.

I'll show some screens and add some descriptive text with them.

Image
Here we see our protagonist bunny using the first magic you'll get in the game. The 'Airblast' magic.
Airblast is simply a fist of compressed air you can fire at enemies. It's slow, slows down fast too and it's pretty weak. But what can you expect of such a low level spell?

Image
Here you can see me running from a wild boar, they will chase you and try to corner you. You'll learn to take these down quickly because one of them can easily take down 2 of your hearts.

Image
This screen still has an older version of the hud but it shows us Pops. The old bearded bunny who gives you your first magic. Epic dialog integrated in this npc. (NOT(yet, lol))

More soon, byebye
