So im considering hosting somewhat short competitions, with themes of coarse. so im curious, what game genre would you guys like to see a competition for first? platformers, beat em ups, rpgs etc.

Well, you're the one who is starting it. Maybe you ought to choose the first theme or style. You could have the event's winner be allowed to choose the next event's details.

If I were to choose, I'd go with shoot-em-ups to start with. But I'm just a retro junkie anyway.

i don't really do competitions. Because ever time i try it seems like something in my personal life always tries to derail it. But i do like to check them out when they have them on here.

I think the genre shouldn't be limited. This site has always come up with some interesting results when you got a good platformer versing another type or genre. Plus these days good game making is blending elements for all kind of genres. Beat em ups are taking from rpg's and rpg's are adding more real time fighting to up their action.

As for picking a theme or setting my vote is to just generate a list of words. Cartoon Artist often do this for creative practice. lets say for example

setting
1.space
2.wild west
3.zombie (end of the world)

gay character or challenge character
1.hello kitty
2.captain crunch
3.flow the progressive insurance girl

base character
1.vampire
2.ninja
3.Frankenstein

optional interest
1. chess
2. you tube cats
3. torture devices

This could be a list for three artist and they take turns picking. But they have to use elements from their picks for the cartoon picture they were making. With the character being a blend of elements from the words they got, and a strong since of the setting.

it's a lot of fun. and i think it could work with game making too.

If you've never heard of it, here's a link to the official page of The Arbitrary Game Jam, a 24-hour bragging-rights compo which opens the field of games to be made to all genres and styles. In contrast to what I suggested (but more in line with Pan-Tosser), it uses words as the guidelines for creation, submission, and selection. I entered it once and after a flurry of activity over a weekend, came up with a fun little diversion.

My entry for the game jam (from October of last year): RUN LIKE HELL.

It's amazing what one can do if they push themselves to do something with a tight deadline.

A game jam sounds like it would be fun if there where a good amount of people participating.

Here is the link i have. Using an app like this is better for a jam. Cause on here we have to have uploads approved. Every once in a while it can get active.

I did a "Secret Santa" compo last year at glorious trainwrecks, and had a blast with it! We could easily do something similar here.

(My entry for the event was "Gnomus Maximus")

Everyone who wants to make a game posts a "wish list" of stuff they'd like to see in a game made just for them. Then the organizer would distribute the recipients to the participants, and everyone uses their recipient's wish list as a guide to make a game by the end of the year. Personally I was tremendously inspired by the process and came up with one of my best games to date, using the PMO successfully for the first time and everything. LOTS of fun.
