Depends on if we are talking about singleplayer.

HL1 singleplayer is awesome. Opposing force is awesome. Haven't played blue shift, but only hear good things about it.

I don't like hl2.

Halo 1 singleplayer is aite. 2 Sucks ass. 3 Is pretty cool.

Multiplayer they are both really different.

I like the fast pace (at least compared to other fps) of the old halflife games which was ruined by half life 2.

Halo is more about straight up teamwork than anything else so they are difficult to compare.

I loved/hated Ravenholm, but only because of those damn scary fast zombies. The first one I encountered I heard first.

My underwear was brilliantly destroyed. Can't wait to do it again.

Halo sucks! Halo can't even look at Half-Life, let alone touch it. How anyone could compare one of the greatest FPS games of all time to a children's game is beyond me.

The pace and atmosphere (like the suspense of something hiding around every corner) of the original Half-Life was perfect. In Halo, you're just running around and pistol-whipping a bunch of three foot tall aliens that can't even hurt you.

And Master Chief is a rip-off of the Doom guy.

Halo's "teamwork" consists of sharing a car and getting run over by teammates.

L4D has way better teamwork as you absolutely cannot win alone. The smokers will make sure of it.

Both games made me shit my pants. But I only shat my pants in disappointment while playing Halo.
Half Life FTW.

In my opinion there's no question here, Half Life is superior.
I have to admit that I only played the first Halo properly, and that I actually didn't enjoy the first Half Life that much (I started it tons of times in an attempt to like it, but finished it only once), but the first Halo was such a terrible experience for me, and HL2 was such an amazing one, that you can't really put them one against the other.

About Halo: What bothered me the most is that many levels were pretty much some design concept that was copied and pasted a few times. I remember a level that practically had the same corridor pasted in 4 different angles, it was just plain laziness from the designers' side. And that horrible, horrible level in that library or whatever that was, with that floating thing going with you...
And what's with that overpowered pistol?!

On the other hand, HL2 is most likely my favorite FPS, from the excellent setting to the constant environment change to keep you interested, and the fact it's all like an endless journey that isn't interrupted by video cut-scenes. Oh, and obviously the gravity gun.
A bit that I remember really liking was on that highway, there was a house that once you entered it and went to the second floor, Combine troops would gather outside. I later reloaded my QuickSave and saw them sneak to the house, it was very nice. Also Ravenholm was an eerie, yet exciting experience.

I didn't like Episodes I and II as much as HL2, not because they were bad but because they weren't as awesome. I don't recall any memorable moments in Episode I, and in Episode II I found the beginning with all the bugs a bit tiresome, but after that it really improved, and I still prefer playing both episodes over Halo.

Maybe I'm not entirely fair because I gave HL a chance to grow and didn't with Halo (sorry, I don't have an X-Box), but I did stumble upon the sequels from time to time, and from what I saw I can't imagine the experience going anywhere near HL2.

It all comes down to this :
After Mr. nerd scientist kills something, he goes and (silently) jumps on crates for half an hour.

The Master Chief on the other hand, would say something cool then kill something else.

And If you haven't played Halo with a controller, you haven't played Halo.

Mr. BADASS Nerd Scientist to you!. You obviously havent played it if you think all you do is jump on crates. Epic Strider Battles. Helicopter Chases. Drop Ship Battles. Headcrab Zombies. Etc. Etc. Its full of pure awesome.

oh and i HAVE played halo with a controller. it still sucks. unless youre playing multiplayer, theres no point in playing it at all.

It's not vague at all. You see the game on the screen. You here the sound effects, and they talk about the crow bar.
