Has anyone ever had the urge to try to recreate a level from a commercial game in TGF, MMF or MMF2? I have once or twice but never bothered.
The idea would be to take a level from any commercial game and try to recreate it as accurately as possible. Ripped sound and graphics are of course acceptable.

I might give this a go today because i'm bored but I don't know what game i would do yet,

Anyone else wanna give it a try?

I like when others try for some reason, but recreating something pixel for pixel would be like tedious purgatory for me. Getting jumping or other movement mechanics just right, perfect collision detection, proper arrangement of tiles...

Yeah I thought it might get boring. But the challenge might be fun?
I dunno. I want to know what others think first.

I've often thought of this, like a 2D side-scrolling version of GTA3, for example. If done right it would be a masterpiece, kinda like when they made GTA:Chinatown Wars - technically poorer than GTA4 but seemingly the superior game!

Others i would suggest (off the top of my head) would be;

1. Side scrolling CoD4
2. Platform version of Mirror's Edge
3. Top-down Halo

Wasn't there an officially sanctioned 2D Mirror's Edge flash game? It wasn't very good if I recall.

I kind of like the idea of 3D to 2D conversions better. I'd love to see someone make a good online overhead Halo with MMF2.

I've thought about making some kind of game that uses the first levels of all major games. I always find the first level of any game the most memorable. But yea I like the sound of this as more of a technical challenge - how much of a game could you recreate. Could be interesting this.

Dr. James, doing just the first level of many games would keep the game making fresh and interesting for most people - not a bad idea when re-making games can become boring!

Sounds like a really good learning experience! Concentrating on the finest details of commercial games you love, should be really enlightening.

How many DC Points would be a good ransom for a 2D Halo clone?

I dunno if i should do a really obscure game. If people don't know it then it's easier to get away with less accuracy.
If there are some things like slowdown or flicker should we bother including that too? I mean it's supposed to be more like a conversion, not emulation.

What do you guys think?

I think i'd like to see a 2D shoot-em-up platformer version of either Quake 1 or Doom 1

A 2d version of a 3d game is kinda missing the point.

Lol, I do that a lot. I just cover it rather well. I've never actually released anything where I did that

I think it's a fun challenge. Also, I don't think 3D to 2D is a waste, it's done often and sometimes it can be really interesting, therein lies the greatest challenge 2D to 2D is also good as well, but I feel there's less fun in creating an absolute clone, though technically it could be really good for developing your coding skills.

Does this imply that we'd rip graphics if going 2D to 2D?

As for the comments on a top-down Halo-type game, there are already projects of really awesome shooters being made.
