What do you think the gameplay should be like for a 1-player action game that has 4 playable characters obtained over the course of the game? i.e. do you think I should implement simultaneous control of the characters, control only one at a time, control one or two at the same time, etc.?

Right now I'm thinking of making a sidescrolling platform game, but possibly a top-down view game, or maybe even something else.

Different scenarios that require different people.

For example, each character is different to the other.

Play animaniacs on the SNES and you'll understand.

Each character should be controlled independently, and you can switch between them.

They will not all neccasarily be on the screen at the same time, but they should still interact with the area around them.

I.e if enemies are in the area of the character, they can attack them.

If this happens you should probably have a warning system of some kind when danger is near (perhaps a hub display with character portraits, health etc, and maybe a counter next to them, or a threat level etc)

Maybe.

For 4 different characters, having them all on screen at once following you around may be a little overwhelming (for a platformer.) Being able to switch between them during gameplay would be nice though, although it would also work if you had to choose at the beginning of a level or how ever you structure the game.

Yeah, think Final Fantasy 8 vs.. say.. Sonic and Knuckles

So your team could follow you around, and you could select which person to use or something in order to achieve certain things You could even use two characters at once to like get to high places and stuff! YAY!

... I scare myself sometimes

Actually what I've been thinking of doing now is basically making a Super Mario Bros-like game w/ four different characters--almost like Super Mario 64 DS in 2D.

Each character has their own speed, HP, jump height, and attack damage, etc. as well as their own ability that can be used w/ Fire2. For example, Mario can dash, Link cuts w/ his sword, etc.

Each character also is able to get their own unique powerup, similar to the Power Flowers from SM64DS--Mario becomes able to do all the stuff that Baby Mario does when he gets the invincibility star in Yoshi's Island, Samus gets the Morph Ball, and Pit is able to fly.

The player is also able to switch between characters by picking up their hats (which are obtained from item blocks)--not by selecting them from a menu. This is to keep the player from getting stuck not knowing which character to use, but there will be some places where multiple hats will be avaliable so that you can take the same route w/ different characters.

I'm hoping to be able to develop it quickly as well, so I'm thinking that the game will have 5 levels, each w/ their own boss battle that each require a specific character to be used (except for the last battle, which switches between characters).

Make an online version.

Where each player controls a different character.

So they have to work together to complete the level.

That actually sounds like a really good idea...

It could be like Four Swords-style gameplay, where the players work together and compete at the same time. But I'd probably keep a multiplayer mode separate from the main one-player game, so that the levels only have to focus on one of those at a time.

Super Mario Bros. 2 for the NES also did this. Make it so that you can choose which one you want to use at the start of each level. Say you have one level that has both a high ledge and a big boulder blocking a doorway- One of your guys can jump really high and another can lift / break boulders. Now say maybe the other 2 can't do either one. If you can incorporate things like this in your game it'd boost the replay value a ton. I'm not saying it'd be easy, but it'd be worth it to try something like that.

OH! And one other thing, if you're going to go through all of this work, don't put Mario, Link, etc. in it. Make your own characters up so that this will be your own baby.

Of course yeah it'd be nice to use original characters, but this time I'm using Nintendo characters b/c I already have a few other projects which use original characters/content. This is basically supposed to be a fun little diversion w/ an extremely different feel in comparison to those.

A long time ago, I used to work w/ this other guy and we'd come up with a lot of random ideas that we never actually put into production, and since then I've made a lot of progress on my own--having completed the old game demo I posted on this site, a movie I made a few months ago, and an extensive RPG project that I completed a fully functional battle system for. This game, featuring the Nintendo characters, happens to be on of those ideas we'd come up with that I found particularly intriguing, so I decided to see what I could do with it w/ the level of experience I have now.

In any case, the whole point of game is supposed to be making fun of video games (even featuring voice-acted cutscenes). I think it's pretty fun to sprite my own original graphics for the Nintendo characters, which should probably give a unique feel to the game as well.

However, I might use this game's engine sometime in the future for a game w/ original characters.
