Sonic was only popular because all the other games were trash in the era. I never really liked the sonic games. All you did was run around and collect round yellow thingies which dropped whenever you did anything. All that effort gone into collecting round thingies would just go to waste whenever I bump into some monkey .

What made sonic good was the level design. You'd go underwater or jump onto things or both. And the boss was pretty fun too. But either way, I still find that MJ's Moonwalker game most fun on the Genesis/Megadrive. You get to kick commies, make zombies dance, and the life goes full whenever MJ touches a little girl .

However, the Sonic comic/series was good. The one where Robotnik has a metal hand and a deep voice, where Sonic's uncle is half-robot. That put some wierd dark twist to sonic, but it was interesting to watch, like Desperate Housewives and the Batman series.

Oh yeah, I remember that one with the giant hand. It was part of some huge robot, but then only the hand was left, and it was like super-powerful or something. Actually I have a feeling that whole thing was a parody of something else.

Ah yeah.. wasn't that "Silver Sonic" aka "Metal Sonic"... though lately they've made him into a massive robot thing that only just about looks like sonic :\

I remember Metal Sonic on Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive He was quite hard

Metal Sonic was called Mecha Sonic back then, and he wasn't a hundred feet tall, so how about no.

Edit:
I've got a feeling it was a Galactus parody.

I thought that Metal and Mecha were two separate things as well. I'll have to ask my brother. He knows every plotline of it worryingly well.

Hehe, there's to many types of robotic sonic to keep up with!! One's blue, one's silver, one's rather big, one's rather big and red (innuendo's aside - the name's mega metal sonic or something.. lool) Craziness

I think the large blue one is called something like metal madness and the other red one is metal overlord or something similar...

And I think the first ever metal sonic was a metallic grey and first appeared in Sonic CD..

Edit: I'm pretty sure that "Mecha" sonic was just the Japanese equivalent to our Metal Sonic :\ aka Silver Sonic

There was a metal sonic in both sonic 2 and sonic cd, they were made by different teamsa Only the one from sonic cd seems to ever been used again.

Also the sonic the hedgehog games were fun to play, I enjoed sonic adventure although it was painfully clear that 3d was not as good as 2d. Ever since then it's getting a little worse. Sonic heroes is probably the last 3d sonic game i'll ever get. I was also dissapointed with Sonic rush.

Wong: In the comics, first there was Pseudo Sonic (who was like a fat little robot clone), and then in their 25th issue Mecha Madness special, which I still have, they did a tie-in with Metal Sonic, only he was called Mecha Sonic and Knuckles had to go through the robotizer they got when they rescued Bunnie to become Mecha Knuckles in order to fight it. It was still the same guy.

In the UK we had a different comic with a different storyline.

The Robot from Sonic cd appeared a few times, VS knuckles and Chaotix (and nack the weasel)
He was called Mettalix (i think)

sadly i threw all of my issues away, although i think there is an archive on the internet somewhere.

Sonic the comic.
