My motovation has always been to make games that challenge me. I'm pretty damned good at games in general; so most of mine tend to be hard as nails (in fact, I think everything I've released has been stupidly hard).
But I'm old school, as in you weren't actually supposed to be able to beat the game, but the ending was there just in case you did. (Ex. Contra, Gradius 3 [Arcade!]) That's the type of game I grew up with, and that's the type of games I make. I think most games are WAY too easy nowadays.
