Yeah. My dad was bald at 30 and so was my mum's dad, so genetically, I'm fucked. I'm making the most of my hair whilst I still got it.

My job is making me cut my "hippie hair" as they call it, which sucks, but I'll get a promotion out of it.

Male pattern baldness runs in my family too. I swear I was molting when I went in the shower.

Yeah, I have to unclog my drain almost every moring. Of course, I knew it was going to happen since I was old enough to realize what "Bald" was. I'm the lucky one it seems. Both my uncles were bald by 21, and I'm 23 and it's just now starting to recede.

It is possible to halt it if you treat it early enough.

I'm taking a 1mg tablet of 'Propecia' daily and I went from losing quite a bit of hair daily to none now and i'm even seeing some regrowth.

MPB (Male patten baldness) can be treated. Your a sucker if you sit back and let it happen.

Darkman: Propecia (Finasteride) can also be used by people who take steroids to avoid detection, so if you intend to do pro sports then you might wanna have a break from it.

I'm definitely not a sporty person.

It does work though in helping fight hairloss and most effective the earlier you use it.

I think i'm relatively safe, and i don't really have to worry about that now seeing as i'm 13. My dad's 53 and still has hair and my grandfather's 69 and he still has (grey) hair.

Pete, you're not definitely damned to a life of baldness. Baldness is a sex-linked trait on the X chromosome. So you said your grandfather was bald, meaning that he was had a recessive x allele. Therefore, his genotype must be (xY). Your grandmother had to be either homozygous dominant or heterozygous, because if she were homozygous recessive, your mother and your grandmother would most likely have gone bald at one point. So I'm going to assume your grandmother's genotype was (XX). Now when your grandparents had your mother, she must have been born with a heterozygous genotype. So your mother's genotype is probably (xX). Now you said your father is bald, meaning he too has a recessive X allele. So your father's genotype is (xY). Now if your mother is heterozygous, as I guessed, and your father is bald, you have a 1/4 chance of being bald. So unless you've already seen symptoms of baldness, there's the chance that you won't go bald.

Wow Spork, you just made my day. I wish I could pretend to understand your reasoning but I'll happily accept the conclusion.

Screw you, baldness!

That's probably the best, unflawed logic I've ever seen on this site.

If my thinking is correct, it might be flawed however, since Male Pattern Baldness runs only through males, and isn't the same gene that causes baldness in females. This could mean your mothers allele might be homozygous, and you might have a 3/4 chance of going bald.

Wait a minute, if Pete's mum is xX, doesn't that mean she has the baldness gene? And if Pete's dad has it, doesn't it mean that Pete will have 1/2 chance? Oh I don't understand. Where are those tree diagrams with friendly hints written on?

Makes no odds for me anyway, I've got bald males on both sides of my family. Coincidence happened today as well, while I was tying my shoes my mate said "I swear you're going bald you - look at that bald spot there!". Oh, the humanity.

@Darkman: You speak as if MPB was a disease. You are a sucker if you think being bald makes your more unattractive. What does make you more unattractive is if you try to hide it, or take drugs.
