Just a quick note, then I'll crawl back into my grave again

I just found (and bought) a very very awesome and cheap Icon program, called IconXP.

I thought it'd be worth mentioning here, because it's the kind of app I would have loved back when I did clicking. You can build an alpha PNG file in Photoshop, Paintshop pro, or some other app (or in IconXP itself, but I don't like the editor), then convert it to an ICO file. This way you can make nice professional-looking XP icons! Yayness!

You can also rip icons from Dlls and Exes, converting them to PNG. So u can use windows icons in conjunction with the Alpha Object.

And it's cheap!!

You can buy it in different currencies, so the exchange rates can make it super-cheap. Mine was only about £13, incl. VAT. And there's a trial version.

Hope this helps someone!

Oh shit... you can create ICO files with MS Paint! Just add to end of filename ".ICO"!

Much cheaper.

And you get pics to "professional-looking" with PSP9.

infact, if you rename an bmp file to .ico you can use it as an icon, just no transparency.

The program looks okay.

The icons created with paint by renaming them to *.ico are sometimes not recognized by programs which do have a check for a valid icon format in the *.ico file.
Windows isn't that picky, it will just accept any graphic file renamed to *.ico so that's no problem.

If you don't have £13 to spend, try this one:
http://www.wildfiredesign.net/iconlab/index.htm
It's called iconlab and it will do for basic icon creation.
