I think something like a goodie system, like Natomic has. Dunno much about it either, ask the one's who busy with it (look at the home page).
I think DC points should be worth something. For instance, get, say, 1000 DC points and you get a special transition pack. Get 10000000 DC points and you get MMF2
I didn't think the games were judged by the criteria:
"Mentioned earlier was the Mario style theme. This does not mean a Mario fan-game! Eurgh. Think about the qualities that Mario games have. The inertia. The ability to run. The immaculate and inventive level design. The power-ups. The collectables. Think hard about what makes the Mario games so great and try and employ the techniques used in your own game."
The games that were praised copied the Mario gameplay exactly without adding much innovation or originality. I had gift boxes that you jumped on instead of just copying the typical Mario boxes that you hit from below. I had penguins that slid at you, collectables, and powerups. Still... "This really lacks any form of gameplay, let alone Mario style.".
Damn, my game was rushed, but I didn't think it was that bad.
"Well, at least this game has a custom platform engine. Unfortunately it doesn't actually detect some walls..."

a "fangame" is a game that tries to replicate the original exactly, i.e. same graphics, sounds, enemies, level design... we didn't want a game like that. we were looking for a game that retained the gameplay ethos of mario but had orignal graphics, level design, little idiosyncratic quirks etc. and i'm sorry to say it, jeremiah, but your game was not fun to play. true it did have originality in the penguins etc but they are no good if the core game does not play right. that is why you got a low score. you admit your game was rushed, so i hope you understand this. the winning entries clearly had much more effort put into them.
Pete: And Fat Santa doesn't do that? It has, like, gift-box koopas, Mario getting larger, and throwing gifts instead of fireballs. Even with ripped music and sound effects. Practically the only difference between it and Mario is the sprites. Exactly what I said would happen from the beginning.

I agree it was similar to Mario but i thought it had enough differences (graphics, levels) to distinguish it from a Mario fan game.
