How many of you really care about the sound system of a game? I mean we have all these graphics cards with "even better graphics than ever possible before!" but nobody seems to talk much about sound.

I'm personally a lover of good sound and I think it's kinda sad when you got superb graphics only to have bad voice acting and music. Personally, I think sound's been kinda ignored. We've had so much focus on making screens flatter and clearer, but we still mostly use stereo.

So, who among ye would bother to purchase, say... a cheap $40 surround sound headset? Seeing how much I've spent on graphics cards, I probably would. I'm kinda hoping to be able to make one of those 'virtual reality' helmets that comes with a monitor on the helm as well as surround sound as soon as I graduate. Only prob is 'health risks'. But since Sony Walkmans pound lots of loud music directly into consumer's eardrums, I don't see why my idea would be any more dangerous...

i love sound but only if its *really* good. Halo 2 amped up so you can hear it down the road is beautiful. and who can forget the soundtrack to the Turrican games?

im not too bothered by bad voice acting but good music is very important it REALLY helps set the scene for me.

Music is so underrated.

I'm taking sound pretty seriously in my Zombies Now game, I think sound is important in a horror game, and the more subtle the better.

Sound is important - and is also being taken seriously in Terminal Orbit, using Directsound 2 as you pan across a battle it pans from one speaker to the other accordingly, and gets louder and quieter as it goes past too. Sounds a lot better, imagine how crappy it would be if every sound was the same volume, even battles way off on the other side of the map!

Yeah Tigs, I been using your Directsound object to make the moans of the zombies sound ominously quiet when they're further away. Beats using mutiple volumed wav files.

I have done distance proportional sound (anyone used inverse square as it should be done?)using DMC2 in Riot 3. If your really smart the doppler effect is quite possible too .

I have got some decent Philips Stereo Speakers (100 watts rms) rather than some 7 watt surrund sound satelleite things, and they sound sweet .

Asparagus, if you want I can send you the early version of DirectSound 2. It has panning on positioned sounds, sounds attached to objects, etc. but some features are still missing (like effects).

I thought Echo was in Directsound 1 anyway? I can't check cos I'm at work, but I seem to remember doppler, flanger, echo and about 4 others.

DS2 would have the same effects as DS1, but you'd also be able to apply multiple effects, and have effects on one channel instead of global.

Screw sound. I've been playing NetHack for the past week. Sound is good sometimes, but it's hardly vital if you don't suck at game design.

I love a good sound system too, but I had to disable my Dolby Digital 5.1 for gaming because I play at night and live in an apartment complex. A booming subwoofer isn't exactly what your neighbors want to hear at 1 am. lol.

i live in a detached house in the middle of a field/garden effort with some pretty damn good insulation. windows shut i can play my PC system at its loudest and hear nothing outside and im running some very powerful Wharfedale speakers... alright its only 2 and a sub. but until i get a 5.1 game im happy with my setup

a little off subject but my mates dad is a headmaster at a local primary school and hes got access to some serious audio equipment, wasnt long till they brought home 2 speakers the size of a small car and an amp so loud that at volume level 2 (out of 10) the neighbours rang the police ... how i want that setup
