New Article - Importing Graphics into MMF2

Sketchy has uploaded a very useful article for people pondering how to import many frames of animation into MMF2 without having to resort to the gif format, which is not suited for pixel art at all! Its really worth a read and keeping in mind for future projects.Comments from Sketchy: MMF2's picture editor is very limited compared to almost any dedicated graphics app. However, if you use another app (such as Photoshop), you are left with the problem of how to load your graphics into MMF2 when you're done - which can be an extremely tedious task if you have many frames of animation. Fortunately, MMF2 includes a neat feature which allows you load many frames of animation from a single spritesheet image, provided it is properly formatted.

New Demo The Great Normal Brothers

Marco Medina has released a demo of a rather spiffing platform game called The Great Normal Brothers, featuring himself and his brother as the protagonists. It features nice pixel art and a pretty smooth engine. In some ways it reminds me of DOS games made by Epic Megagames, which is a good thing!

It's well worth checking out, and I am sure Marco would be glad to get some more feedback.Comments from Marco:This Video Game is based directly on two titles that were released in the second half of the 80's, Super Mario Brothers (For the Nintendo Entertainment System, 1985) and The Great Giana Sisters (For the Commodore 64 and Amiga computers, 1987). Features 16-Bit graphics with music that contains instruments from old Video Game Consoles.

New TDC admin: Hagar !

The management at the Daily Click have decided to give old man Hagar a chance at adminship, so I am going to try my best to help out with keeping the front page up to date, and the general upkeep of the site.

Some of you may be aware that I am in the electronics R&D field. For some time I have been tempted to do a series of clicktronics articles, articles on basic electronics and interfacing such electronics to MMF2. It is surprisingly easy to do and is quite fun. If anyone is interested, please let me know.

Firstly I would like to thank Hayo for the awesome and suitably apt crazy old scientist picture (Hagar Inspired), and finally I would like to thank the admins for trusting me enough for such a role.

Be excellent to each other, and have fun clicking.

New Article - Level Editors with Microsoft Excel

Sketchy has written a fantastic, and very detailed article on the possibilities of using good old Microsoft Excel... as a level editor. It's really informative and well worth a read. Included is a source file to assist you.Comments from Sketchy:
"Making a game tile-based is a great way to cut down on the amount of graphics you need to produce, and also speeds up level creation. However, it's almost always necessary to make a custom map editor - fine if you're working on a big project, but very tedious if you just want to make a few quick maps to test an engine. One solution I've found, is to use Microsoft Excel as a map editor. By using Excel's "conditional formatting", it's possible to make quite a functional map editor - and it's even possible to replace a lot of your MMF2 map loading code with just a few formulae in Excel." Click here to read the article and comment on it

New Game - MegaCity

Cole Jefferies has been busy as of late working on his game MegaCity, a puzzle game which requires "thinking, logic and luck" according to the blurb. Already released on iPhone and iPad, there's also a more basic online flash version, and the Xbox360 edition hopefully will be coming out soon too (yes, the runtime is seemingly very close to release now). Take a looksie!Comments from the Author:
"Place requested buildings in the queue to earn points, but watch out: Nobody wants to live next to a landfill site or industrial estate! Everybody wants a nice park or shcool nearby, but the city's budget is limited. This is where you come in. Megacity is a game of planning and thinking ahead to squeeze the most points of out your citizens by clever town planning. And if it all goes wrong, it's their fault for electing you mayor, right? "

This entrant by TDC's resident admin Assault Andy was created for the Ludum Dare #22 competition. Called Stray Whisker, it was eventually ranked 5th out of 717 submissions, which is an extremely impressive feat, and just goes to show that the simplest concepts are often the best.Comments from the Author: A kitty is stranded alone with no way home...
News - GamesGadget Gaming Device

I thought this was worth mentioning, having received a press release from the company involved, which is admittedly a bit out of date, but here we go:A device called the GamesGadget is due for release soon, and its main purpose is to allow portable, on-the-go gaming. It can run games in various formats. What does this mean for us, as a freeware gaming community? Well, it's not inconceivable to believe that the device could run EXE files, meaning that programs created with The Games Factory and MMF2 could potentially be compatible with it.The GamesGadget will also have an iTunes-style store, allowing developers to submit their games for free, and to charge whatever they want for them to be made available to download. Assumptions are to be made that Blaze, the company behind the GamesGadget (and also behind the portable Mega Drive released in the UK a couple of years ago) would take a small portion of the profit.Still, this is exciting news for game developers, but is it likely to seriously compete in a high-stakes environment populated by iTunes and Android? It probably is a bit doubtful, but I personally would love to see some of my old games on the system again... just imagine playing Eternal Daughter, Duel Toys 2, etc, while on the bog :)Click here for the full Press Release

Project Update: A Life of an Unusual Toaster

If you haven't been lurking in the projects section lately, please allow me to draw your attention to Poobical's latest. After the original Mr. Toast project didn't go over too well with his professors, he redesigned it as A Life of an Unusual Toaster, the red-and-black gritty tale of a toaster on a mission. You can check out the dramatic transformation on his project page.

Comments from Poobical: The game is about a living toaster that has to save this world from evil smiling goons, he does this by spitting out toast. The game is going to be a short little game because I'm actually making it for a part of my coursework 'ere at university. I'm hoping to port it to flash, when I get around to buying the flash exporter. Anyway yeah it's going to have around 20 shortish levels and a handful of bosses to defeat. It shall be out and playable by the end of March. (That's when my deadline is.) Everything you see except the sprites are hand-drawn. Yup.

New Engine - 3D Lighting Engine

A very smart 3D lighting engine has been coded by Sketchy. It's called - somewhat unsurprisingly perhaps - 3D Lighting Engine. Already recieving a lot of positive comments, it's a download that you should take a look at. However, you do need the hardware accelerated runtime of MMF! Comments from the Author: This is based on my earlier GTA example, but with a lot of changes. It makes heavy use of Werbad's 3D shader (included), so requires HWA to function.
Happy New Year - Random Tidbits

Firstly, I'd like to wish all at TDC a Happy New Year. Over the last few days we have had a considerable number of submissions, but due to the holiday period, I at least have not had the opportunity until now to look at them properly. You will find two golden news posts below this one! That makes three in one whole day!Right, so 2011 didn't end too promisingly, with the departures of OMC and Rikus, and the initial concern about the future of TDC hanging in the balance (I admittedly, and probably prematurely, created a "Save TDC" Facebook page). TDC at the current time looks to be in a stale environment, but I do ask you all to hang in there - the site will almost certainly be shaken up fairly soon. TDC is not set to close for the foreseeable future. But I do conceed that change is necessary, if not in website design, then in the administration of the site. I do urge you all to please be as patient as possible :) In other news, Clickteam recently hinted on their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/clickteam) that the MMF2 XNA runtime release is very imminent. How soon? Who knows? :) It is Clickteams Andos birthday today. Unless you are reading this on any other date than January 3rd. Happy birthday Andos! Jason Darby has relaunched his website Castle Software. Jason, as we know, has released several iOS games, and written many books on game design, all of which can be found here. The Newgrounds Christmas Competition has had numerous entries created with Clickteam products. Check them out HERE and see what scores were given to them. That's enough news for the moment. Happy New Year!
