Downloading "Wonder Boy: The Prophecy," I was understandably apprehensive. After all, it is mispelled in the game submission area. I was even more worried about what kind of crap I was getting myself into when the installer turned out to be in a completely different language. Not the kind of thing that the average game player is used to, no matter how clean-cut the install may be. So I was turned off from this game from the start. I actually only began to play it at around 2 am when I couldn't sleep and had nothing else to do. So you can see, the initial presentation of this game, that is, the DC post and installer, is horrible, and in much need of improvement.

But as a game player, does that really matter? No! Take Vib Ribbon for the PS1... Nobody really thought it would be great from how it looked... but it was! So I started this game and was quite surprised.

Wonder Boy: The Prophecy has graphics reminiscent of the NES. Though not terribly detailed (which is good, as it conveys the feel of the system), the graphics are very good. If I was holding one of those old Carpal-tunnel-inducing controller, I definitely would have forgotten that I was even on a computer.

The gameplay is terrific. A simple combination of platforming and hack-and-slash, like a dumbed-down version of Castlevania, evading and taking down enemies is both effortless and fun.

The music in this game, while not incredible, works well with the NES feel of this game. The simple tones combine well to create a great Mario-esque feel. Unfortunately, though, the music overpowers the sound effects.

Wonder Boy is very difficult. While individual enemies and bosses aren't terribly hard, you'll find that any mistake you make sends you to the beginning of the game. Very annoying. While this is in the tradition of old NES games, I'm confident that NES developers would have added some sort of resume function if technology allowed them to. But often, what causes your death isn't even your fault. For example, a late jump once forced me into a pit of lava. No problem, the character usually jumps right out. However, I became stuck on the wall of this pit, and died because of a simple collision bug. Repeatedly.

This game is very lacking in the story department. Starting off, you have no idea what it is. As you progress, only a few simple items of text give you any indication as to what you should do next, and little in the way of a story. So while this game is great, there doesn't seem to be much of a reason to play it other than to just beat it.

So, while this is one of the more enjoyable games that I've played recently, it needs a bit of tweaking (for example, sound and music volumes) and a decent storyline in order to stack up to other games out there. You'll find yourself dying constantly, and with no drive to see what happens next in the story, I doubt that many people will even bother to finish this otherwise great, if a aggravating, game.
