Although this demo contains only one level, it's a pretty big one and it gives you the opportunity to get a good feel for the game. The game itself starts off with a typical Japanese power metal theme tune (albeit in MIDI form). After a root around on VGMusic, I had completely failed to discover if it was from an existing Sonic game or not, but I found a "Live and Learn" MIDI, which is always good. There is no Options screen in the demo, so it's straight in to the game.

It does a very good job of recreating the classic Genesis Sonic engine. Features such as not losing speed when you jump, rolling and "charge" rolling - holding Down and pressing Shift - are all here. However, there are a number of flaws in it as well. Most obviously, the height of jumps can't be varied. Ducking is not included, and you can still speed up during a roll - this makes it too easy to speed along the ground taking out all the enemies in your path.

Also, Sonic sometimes gets his spines caught on the platforms when dropping off them. This could easily be solved by using an invisible collider object. If ideally the purpose of recreating an engine is to show no trace of the standard Click platform movement, the author has done well, but there are still things that could be improved. Another example is spikes - you die even if you run into them from the side. This never happened in the original games.

I don't recognise the Sonic sprite used from anywhere, and I think that I've played all the Sonic games. If it was drawn by the author that's very impressive, but I suspect it was from somewhere else. Still, I could be wrong. Anyway, the graphics are used reasonably well but there are some dodgy moments, like the high walls near the end of the level that look as if they should have platforms on them.

With a few tweaks here and there this could become the most convincing Sonic engine that I've seen yet, but at the moment it just seems to drag a bit, and as you all know in a Sonic game that's not good. A decent effort, though, and anyway I like the music. <¦-)
