Creature sketches
Posted 3rd Mar 12, by Neuro
The first 3 are older, from my first attempt last year. I'm attached to some of these, especially the hermit-crab-knight and willow fighter (currently my avatar!).
The next are more recent, either new ones or trying to refine or experiment with the older ones. I've noticed I tend to just pick an animal and give it an element, too.

Opinions would be great. I don't really have names for them yet, either, and I'm not sure I want to follow Pokémon's naming conventions.

Oh and the last one is silly, but I love it. The map is a big consideration, too, and I actually don't mind the general shape of that one.

Well here's a funny thing. When I first saw this project I clicked the "Alpha Pack" project pic hoping that it'd let me see more sketches. And you now update with this Love the map!!

I like the "Twig Bird" (needs a better name) - the concept of a bird with leaves instead of feathers etc is very creative
The Hermit Crab is nice too.
I think the others are not stylized enough - they're too much like real creatures, whereas Pokémon are more like caricatures.

I've had a couple of ideas of Pokémon-ish games I wanted to make, including something based on "Battle Beasts" - one of my favourite toys as a kid: http://www.toyarchive.com/BattleBeasts/Figures/FiguresList.html

Yeah Sketchy, that's been frustrating me a bit. I look back and a lot of them are very bland. I've been trying to come up with some kind of method to kick-start that kind of creativity. Maybe I'm approaching design from the wrong direction...

I'm hoping TDC can help, anyway. Contributing a creature design would guarantee credit! Right now I have certain guidelines I'm working around, but I'm definitely open to any possibility. The game is still at a very early stage and not a lot is set in stone.
