Talent show

Silly devlog title. But it IS about talents though.

So, what I recently added in the game are talents. I originally called them classes, but then decided on talents instead. There are six talents, one for each proficiency group. You can discover two talents, which will become your permanent bonus for the rest of the game. To discover a talent, you need to reach level 4 of a proficiency. Talents generally give a boost to main attributes, but may also increase HP or MP as well, or give status immunities. Talents also define which of several proficiency skills/bonuses you can learn from proficiency groups. Some are only available if you have the talent. Overall, talents don't necessarily make a huge difference in early game, but in late game the talents' bonuses become more apparent.

Talents are as follows:
Image Fighter (one-handed) - Focus on balanced combat, but little magic bonuses.
Image Guardian (two-handed) - Focus on high DEF and HP.
Image Lancer (polearms) - Focus on high SPD and some MGC.
Image Ranger (ranged) - Focus on ranged combat and mobility.
Image Mage (elemental) - Focus on offensive spells and casting speed.
Image Druid (mystic) - Focus on defensive and restorative spells.

Before you wonder how complex I'm going to go with the character building, this is just about the last thing. Some artifacts and additional proficiency skills will be added down the line, but that's it.

Project Name
I'm also going to be renaming the project as 'Twisted Tower - Chapter 1', since chapter 1 is basically the first release, whenever it'll be done. Its success determines how I expand the game further.

Music
Strife has been working on some new music as well, so the next trailer I'll make should have some new tunes in it. No plans for such trailer in immediate future though.

Statistics
Lastly, a little random statistics I've discovered.

* It seems to take about 3 hours to finish first 20 floors of the tower if you fully explore all floors and kill most enemies. Chapter 1 will be 30 floors, so I'm expecting about 5 hours of gameplay for chapter 1 overall. More if you plan to look for special enemies and items, or to finish all side quests.

* There are now 19 enemies, 1 boss and 1 special enemy (harder version of a normal one). My goal is to have about 30 enemies, 2 bosses and at least three special enemies for chapter 1.

* There are now 19 spells. I'd like to have at least 30 for chapter 1.

Great news ! I like the idea of the "class"/talents. It looks great ! 3 hours for finishing the first 20 floors ? AWESOME !

Good luck !

Great work! This project is really amazing and I hope all the thought and work you put into this will pay off and make a great game!

I'm a little concerned if this may be too distinct from other casual rpgs (with new stats like SPD or two handed weapon talent increasing defense instead of damage like most other rpgs would do) and maybe casual players will be thrown off by the additions you try to implement in your game, or maybe it's a refreshing wind that players will appreciate. We will see

I have a question about the release: will this game be freeware or will you sell it somehow?

Blue66:

Thanks.

The SPD attribute is indeed still slightly iffy, since skill can in many cases beat it. That's one reason for the talents to be there. Lancers and Rangers can possibly get skills or bonuses that enhance mobility and evasion, to add to the effects of SPD.

As for two-handed increasing DEF, it's actually fairly logical. When you attack with a two-handed weapon, it's a slow action, and takes away from your time to evade attacks. Thus, you'll get more DEF and HP to compensate for the lack of evasion. Two-handed weapons themselves have high chance of having ATK bonuses, they have a high damage modifier (even more so if you're a Guardian with high proficiency) and the proficiency itself adds ATK upon equipped weapon, so the end result for a Guardian is having high DEF and fair ATK. So it's basically a tank -type talent.

Chapter 1 will be freeware with 99% certainty. (that 1% is reserved for natural disasters and horrid financial situation), but further chapters may come with a price tag. Although, it seems I may be getting a full-time job soon, in which case I might not need to sell games. Time will tell. Chapter 1 should be freeware though, so I can gauge the success before deciding how to proceed from there on.

I never post here, however this is just too awesome to leave unattended. I've been keeping an eye on this project for a long time, glad to see you've kept at it. You've obviously put a lot of thought into it, I would gladly pay for each chapter if you decide to head in that direction. Looks extremely promising, and good luck with finishing Chapter 1!
