Competition Time - Community Compo 2013
News posted 20th February, 2013 by Hagar
Well ladies and gentlemen, two most bodacious TDC members, SMR and Eight Bit Battlecat FKA Eviscerator are organising a community competition.

The rules are fairly simple and the competition consists of two phases:

Phase A:
People vote on a specific game theme from the following:
* Lasers
* Robots
* Grass
* Arrows
* Cooking

Please make your vote in the following thread. Voting shall stop midnight GMT on the 22 February.

Phase B:
Make your game incorporating the elected theme within 2 days. If my calculations are correct - this should be this weekend coming (23rd and 24 of February), so make sure your ready for a weekend of game creation goodness.

For further clarification on the rules please check out the following forum.

I hope to see some great games come of this competition, so get posting your votes and making some games this weekend! Good luck everyone!

Who came up with the themes? I would love to enter, but I have so many other things to do these days.

only 2 days to make the game?

Urban - SMR and I came up with them. They may or may not be stupid, but you're welcome to come up with suggestions for next time.

Andy - Yeah. We're expecting tiny games

@UrbanMonk: EBBC and I came up with the general themes for people for which to vote.

@AndyUK: Yup, just two days.

The idea is for people to come up with a small - but complete - game. There's little time to obsess over the little details; it's not that kind of competition.

We just want to see more people involved in submitting games. When there's no deadline, then people tend to slack off and eventually forget to finish a project. When there's too much time, there's much more likelihood that people will abandon their efforts.

With a short timeline, people can stay focused on the fact that there's little time to put something together, so even if their game isn't perfect they'll still be able to complete something.

EDIT: Hahaha! EBBC beat me to it!

It seems I made a mistake with the countdown. As of writing this there is about 31 hours left before the development phase begins. I apologize if any confusion has been caused.

I like the themes, but it seems having one easy theme mixed with a bunch of more difficult ones has skewed the voting.

I reckon it's easy to come up with a game for any of those themes. It's just that Robots are cooler.

I mean, put Ninjas in with getting dressed, politics and monday mornings. What do you think people will choose?

They should pick Monday mornings. That would be a great theme.

I think it depends on the mood one is in. I agree with AndyUK that a game can be created with any of those themes (else we wouldn't have chosen them). Sure there are low-hanging fruit, but there will always be something like that, regardless of what's chosen.

If ROBOTS ends up being the theme, then that just means that more people can make entries. That's cool with me.

(although I would love to see more COOKING-themed games!)
