TDC gets some new paint!
News posted 18th September, 2011 by Rikus
TDC got a bit of a change in design today. First let me say this is not the newly coded TDC in development by clubsoft, instead while we are waiting for that new version we did decide to change the overall look to bring it a bit more into 2011. Big thanks goes to Clubsoft for also doing this.

As you can see we took out the left bar and placed those items on the new top menu and on the right. What this does is that the TDC now pretty much looks the same for everyone on all resolutions. This makes the front page to have a more stronger feel and when admins create a news post they know for sure their layout will not change depending on who is looking at it. Let us know your comments but since the overall design of TDC never really changed ever since we started back in 2001 i hope you agree this is a big step in the right direction as we wait for the new site to come online later.

Update from Clubsoft: For those who have a larger resolution, there's also a "widescreen" version of the default skin under the skins setting page (through control panel) which adds a bit more width

Excellent, proves the community is still going strong

two positive comments? lets be a COMBO breaker:

awful

did screens get smaller in 2011 or whats with all that empty space? i want stuff back on the left where it belongs.

Sometimes change is hard to swallow even more so since we all have been looking at the old design for so long. But as we move on and fix some little things this change is in my opinion actually a very positive thing, even more so since the newly coded site also uses a similar design. We cannot make everyone happy and I am sure we will not in this case. But I am hoping most people will give the new design a big hug.

I was waiting for the page to fully load, but this I released is was loaded.

It's cool I suppose.

I did get an error when I first logged in though. heh.

Ooh, very nice! I give the new design a big hug.

The only thing that makes me iffy is that a horizontal scrollbar appears when the window is small enough, at least in Firefox. But, since most people keep their browsers maximized anyway, I don't see this as too much of a problem - just minor nitpicking.

As for the left being empty, I think it's a technical improvement, but you could probably make it look more unified by making a small gradient effect on the left border of the page, or some sort of colored border. It's fine either way, IMO.

I like it. Kudos

Posted by Hagar 18th September, 2011

Kudos for the effort, but it still needs some work IMO, although it could work well with a little polish. Unless you zoom in the new design wastes so much screen real estate - and zooming in makes pages such as the control panel look broken.

Plus does anyone run resolutions like 1024 x 768 anymore ? I seriously hope/doubt so

Also where has the active page link gone ?

Awesome ^^

I like where it's going, but I do agree that we need to fill the screen out more. I don't like the empty space on the left and right sides.

And while you'll never be able to make EVERYONE happy, having an option to 'fill screen' would at least take the few people that are a little disappointed, not as disappointed.

The new design is giving me a headache. It just feels so weird with the left side of the screen being naked. I think it may be the left align or something, I dunno.

It does look a lot cleaner and more spacey.

I take it there is no way to revert to the old layout?

If you look at a lot of other sites they also make use of a similar design, I believe even cnn.com does it now. We do take suggestions, and we can always make the center slightly bigger and tinker a bit with the edges to differentiate between the two if needed, but again this makes for a much cleaner look were everyone is seeing the same design. Before the site would look different depending on someones resolution. The new site design also looks great on mobile devices and tablets. The more I am browsing within the site the more I am loving it.

-Big Hug and thanks for everyone who is chipping in with their viewpoints positive and constructive it will only help make the site better. Thanks!

Seems wrong that its not centred... Thought my browser wasn't maximised o.o'

I like it!

Assuming the new TDC eventually arrives, with a proper CSS layout, we'll all be able to pitch in and skin away the things we don't like, won't we?

Posted by GamesterXIII 19th September, 2011

I think my problem is just the fact that it has been one way for such a long period of time I'm not quite sure how to comprehend the sudden change.

I'd say the left alignment plays a major role.

Aw geez...

I'm not particularly fond of this new design. I really hate the lack of anything on the left side. Looks jarring to me. Since I read from left ro right, it feel like I'm reading a halfway blank page.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll grow to like the new layout. It's just that there's a lot of growing to do.

Kudos to all the work it doubtless took to make the new layout, though.

Epic.

Posted by Silveraura 19th September, 2011

Of the default skin, sure... but what about my skin? How can I fix it.

Posted by Clubsoft 19th September, 2011

I'll probably code in an option to allow you to disable or enable widescreen for any skin you use, but this'll have to be another day as it requires database changes, I'll sort it out when I can though this week!

@Hagar: I use 1024x768

@Everyone else: What blank space? I guess I don't see it due to above.

@DC: Also thought it was broken at first, mostly due to how the profile box cuts the top silver bar and that is lacks boundaries in opposition to every other box.

Overall dramatic but proper change!

Looks great! Well done guys!

I really like the new design! Everything seems much better

Posted by nim 19th September, 2011

It's an improvement I think. It looks like it's in an awkward transitional phase right now, but it's good to see things changing. I'm looking forward to when we can have custom css layouts mostly.

Posted by UrbanMonk 19th September, 2011

Ah! It looks so much better in widescreen mode.
I'll get used to it!

Could you move the sidebar to the left side of the screen. I think it would look more balanced that way.

I know the purpose is to make it seem open and new but the intention was washed away when you closed us in by putting everything on the right.

Trust me, move it to the left. For the love of all design....move it to the left PLEASE.

To the left, to the left.

Posted by Cecilectomy 19th September, 2011

i'll give it that it does look cleaner, but there are still poor design choices.

why are important things on the right side of the page? english is read from left to right. it doesn't feel natural. it's a preference i feel the majority would agree on, and if not, make it as such, a preference optoin, with a natural default.

no more active user page? or did it get buried somewhere. can't seem to find it.

certain elements are completely screwed up. comment box is all misaligned and out of whack for me. certain pages are accessible when not logged in that shouldn't be (although they may have always been like that? noticed very quickly NOW though).

and like stated previously, why all the unused space? at least fill it with something contrasting. id rather have a thin page with contrasting unused space, than a text filled wide page.

edit: speaking of optional preferences, where did those go to? dont see those either. nowhere under control panel, no link to it, nothing.

another thing is i'd rather have functional issues fixed before you slap a new coat of paint onto something old and broken. it looks nice, but it still doesn't work well.

i honestly dont care whether it looks nice or not... I JUST LOVE IT, simply due to the fact im seriously sick of the old layout.

nice one. i like it too!

Posted by Muz 19th September, 2011

I like it, even if it's just because it's different. Been staring at the old one for too long now. The old site had a lot of buttons I never pressed, and this one just looks a lot tidier.

Posted by Chrisbo 20th September, 2011

I'm using the default skin, and it looks like the sidebar got moved from the left to the right. The rest looks basically the same?

Posted by twiterror 20th September, 2011

I like it, hope it doesn't get removed by circy!

Posted by Muz 22nd September, 2011

Though after looking at this a while, I agree with Cecil in that the side stuff should be on the left instead.
