The End Of GotW!
News posted 13th April, 2009 by Rikus
Here is a tribute to our GOTW! After being with us since 2002 it is now time to bid it farewell! We decided to change the outdated format and starting May 1st to bring you: GOTM!! You will be able to vote for all the games submitted for April on May 1st. Its going to be a tougher price to get a hold off. There will be tears and cheers but I think this will be for the best. The winner of the GOTM will receive 1000 Dc points to spend, and oh yea a new trophee could be yours!

So lets say goodbye to our old friend GOTW in the comments section and wave Hello to GOTM. Game on!

Posted by Cecilectomy 13th April, 2009

finally!

please tell that we are also starting a goty as well?
this makes it a much better feature.

Posted by W3R3W00F 13th April, 2009

Well darn, looks like competition is going to get tougher than before. What about both of them together? The GOTM poll will always have games while the GOTW poll MIGHT have games.

Posted by Silveraura 13th April, 2009

Wow, this was somewhat unexpected?

Posted by Scott S 13th April, 2009

Nooooooooooo GOTW why did you leave me? ;_;

Posted by Cecilectomy 13th April, 2009

wait. cant we do just one more? so we can end on an even number? a solid 320?

Posted by Silveraura 13th April, 2009

Yeah, lets finish it off with an even number. Give my OCD a break.

Posted by Rhys D 13th April, 2009

hey rikus...any chance I can get those ultra cool trophy icons for winning it twice all those years ago?!

bye GotW

Posted by Rikus 13th April, 2009

Wish I could but since all the games have been april submissions its only fair to start with a clean month.

Posted by Blue66 13th April, 2009

Does that mean a game now actually has to be GOOD to win something at this page?

Great, have to re-do 90% of GunGirl 2 now, thanks!

Posted by Cecilectomy 13th April, 2009

its still user voted (right?). so technically it just has to be better than everthing else.

Posted by Tropik 13th April, 2009

Please, don't leave me GOTW!

Posted by X_Sheep 13th April, 2009

Yes, I did just watch the entire animated thing.

Also in before OMG THE COMMUNITY IS DYING

Posted by MJK 13th April, 2009

This is a good change. There weren't enough good games in GOTW polls to compete for the prize, and it was just too easy to get with even adequate games. Hence the value of GOTW was quite low.

Whether a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly competition is the best choice, it's of course dependant on the size and activity of the community. At this moment a monthly vote is probably the best one given the current submission frequency. Then again if the community suddenly grows drastically in the future with pro developers, e.g. due to Flash and other new Click-runtimes available, then GOTW might become more relevant again.

It could make sense to give out also silver and bronze prizes in addition to the GOTM prize, when the number of games in the poll is over 20-25. There will be even some minor Click classics losing the GOTM, so to avoid tears and mental breakdowns, these kind of secondary prizes could be useful.

Posted by Marko 13th April, 2009

Great move, can't wait to see the first GOTM. It also makes me cherish my GOTW more now since no-one else will ever win another one on TDC!

Posted by Hayo 13th April, 2009

Great. It was too easy to win GOTW awards (just look at how many of them I won, even with old K&P games).

Posted by Toadsanime 13th April, 2009

Well, that was slightly unexpected. Though I will miss GOTW, I gather that you're doing this because of the low amount of entries that is received on some weeks.

Bye GOTW, you'll always hold a special place in our hearts.

Posted by Sketchy 13th April, 2009

Good. I always felt bad for those people who put a lot of time and effort into making brilliant, GOTW winning games, only for a piece-of-crap to win the next week due to lack of entries.

I do agree with Sketchy though.

This is a jolly good idea.

Posted by OMC 13th April, 2009

Well Sketchy has a point, but in GOTM, some good projects that would have won a GOTW and deserved it won't get it because another slightly better one wins the GOTM award. Still good though.

Posted by Codemonkey 13th April, 2009

This is a good idea.

Posted by markno2 13th April, 2009

Bring back GOTW. =[

Posted by Ski 13th April, 2009

Although a lot of developments on the site are nice, and people luckily like them/agree with them, it's a bit risky making such decisions without consulting the community before hand. This is a community site, after all.

Posted by DaVince 13th April, 2009

This post basically says "we've become too lazy to do one a week and justify our GOTM with some reasons like 'it becomes higher quality!'".

Nah, just kidding.

Posted by Poobical 13th April, 2009

=(. Oh well, GotM sounds a good idea, it'll hopefully give us less spammy games I guess. Although I do think the 3rd, 2nd and 1st places that MJK said is a good idea, because it be a shame if three decent good games were released in one month and only one could win something.

I feel like once the Arcade gets going and ppl will submit more games. And maybe A(arcade)GOTW will be desirable...

Posted by maVado 13th April, 2009

I second MJK, second and third place should also get a small bonus!

Posted by OMC 13th April, 2009

Didn't we do that before? When a race is close and not spam/crap games, I think you can get a silver trophy.

Posted by Hernan 13th April, 2009

The whole "Game of the [insert time-span here]" should be replaced with something that rewards creating a good game, rather than having the most votes in some time period.
But that's just what I think. Noone's gonna agree with me anyway ;-;

Posted by steve 13th April, 2009

less spammy games, good

Posted by OMC 13th April, 2009

Acutally, I agree with you Hernan. I think each game should be voted on for awards individually. However, it's less competition that way, and you know how everyone just loooves competition.

Posted by AndyUK 13th April, 2009

So am i the only person that thinks this is a bad idea? Do you expect everyone that votes each month to have played all the games released in a month?
How can you possibly expect it to be a fair vote unless people play all the games in the running?

Of course this was a problem with GOTW too, but making it monthly makes the problem worse.

Posted by Chris Vermilya 13th April, 2009

makes me sad that i wont get the chance to win a GOTW anymore but make it mean alot more winning #1 game of the whole month

Posted by Ski 13th April, 2009

some kind of system where the games ratings are compared from that month, and which ever game that has a rating and the highest wins? Meh, I dunno, I'm going to eat lasagne now.

Posted by Zoglu 13th April, 2009

I agree with AndyUK & Hernan.
GOTM won't solve the problem, people are not going to play all games just because the poll is more important and lasts longer.
And as with GOTW, the winners will be the games which appear on the front page (the others will be simply ignored), and those made by a "well-known" member.
It would be better if GOOD games were rewarded, for instance, with the "TDC Recommended" thing, instead of BETTER games.

Posted by MJK 13th April, 2009

Adam's idea doesn't quite work because people rate individual games by different criteria than games against certain other games. An example of this is some cute and addictive minigame which can easily get a fairly high rating, let's say 4.0 stars. Some more "hardcore" adventure game gets 4.0 stars as well, so these games would be "equally good" when their individual ratings are compared, but when these games are put to a poll against each other, the bigger game wins like 50-5 or whatever. "Good rating" means different for games of different scope. So you can't use ratings to sort out the best game from a group of games, unfortunately.

One option, which I personally might prefer, is to keep the GOTW as a secondary award, and use the games that get selected from there (=wins GOTW) in the GOTM polls. So the GOTM poll would always contain 4-5 games; all GOTWs during the month. Well, of course it would mean also more work for the admins, but this system should ensure everyone knows the games which are up for the GOTM prize (+ keep smaller award onboard).

I like your idea MJK. I think the idea of losing GOTW completely is bad.

Also as a side opint has anyone checked the links to the older GOTW's?? the hand game is linking to the wrecks great balls of fire.

Posted by Dr. James MD 13th April, 2009

Good idea MJK, GOTWs go into the GOTM poll.

Posted by Cecilectomy 13th April, 2009

i third mjk's idea. even though i think its been mentioned long ago when gotw was under scrutiny.

Posted by Muz 13th April, 2009

I've been wanting to see GOTM for well.. like 6 or 7 years now. It's reached a point where it's not really a choice anymore.

The problem with GOTW now is that people are spending more time on their games and a week can go with only one submission (especially during the US/European summer).

Also, the worst part is that there are sometimes 2 excellent games in poll at the same time. Sometimes the second game is better than the next 10 GOTW winners, but loses because it goes up against some even better game with better marketing.

The "2nd place GOTW" trophy doesn't work too.. because sometimes you have two bad games for the next week.

GOTM is good, it makes the award worth something. I could never take GOTW seriously. I mean, seriously, when was the last time any kliker ever mentioned that the game won a GOTW award?

Posted by Rikus 14th April, 2009

Thanks for the great comments and suggestions folks! However I think we will give this a try for now see how it goes if the games pickup we can always change it, you know this is not set in stone whatever works best right, the idea here is to try out something new and we will go from there

Posted by Ski 14th April, 2009

Tbh I rarely see a game I like in GOTW, GOTM won't make much difference, it will just be like.. 4 times worse.

Posted by alastair john jack 14th April, 2009

Awesome, good choice!

Posted by maVado 14th April, 2009

So what about carrying over the second and third place into the next month poll? So those games still have a chance to win next time. If they do well they might win the next month trophy if the competition is weak.

Posted by Cecilectomy 14th April, 2009

what about having database entry for each months gotm that saves which games were entered, how many votes each got, and how they all compared, with the winner at the top.

so like if you click on the winner for a certain month, it also displays all its competitors in order of how they compared.

Posted by Muz 14th April, 2009

"Tbh I rarely see a game I like in GOTW, GOTM won't make much difference, it will just be like.. 4 times worse."
4 times better you mean. Well, more like 3. You get a larger sample size to pick from, so you're much less likely to get bad games winning. And it's only once a month, so even if GOTW's a bad thing, it's 4 times less

Posted by columbo borgi :C 14th April, 2009

nooo. i cant get gotw medal now?! ;*-C

Posted by 3kliksphilip 14th April, 2009

Yesssss... I got a GOTW award just in time!

Posted by AndyUK 14th April, 2009

I doubt it will be 3 times better Muz. Like I said there is no way everyone that votes is going to have played all the games that month. So how can the voting be fair?

Posted by 3kliksphilip 14th April, 2009

It won't be fair. But hopefully it will encourage people to spend more time making games, instead of rushing one just before the week is over.

Anything by OMC is gonna be good, real good!

Posted by moonbird99 14th April, 2009

GOTW put too much pressure on people. Hopefully GOTM will inspire better quality. Good idea.

Posted by Sephirenn 15th April, 2009

Damn this sucks. Now there's no way in hell I'm going to win the thing.... Image

I also support giving out a trophy for 2nd and 3rd. Just honoring first place over an entire month is pure rubish.

I never paid any attention to GOTW, unless either I submitted a game or something I really liked was in it.

Maybe this will be a little more interesting. Probably easier to check up on for people who have little free time. I think it's a good move, and fully support Silver and Bronze trophies!

Posted by Muz 15th April, 2009

"I doubt it will be 3 times better Muz. Like I said there is no way everyone that votes is going to have played all the games that month. So how can the voting be fair?"
You have 4 times longer to play all the games. And you'll be playing them longer too - so a game that has 1 week of playability will rightfully have higher status over a game that's really fun in the first hour then gets boring and repetitive. And the spotlight can switch every few days over many games, rather than having it on the same game for half the voting period.

The GOT2W format was unfair, because everyone plays the games the week before that and may not play the games of the latest week. GOTM gives you at least a month to play, and a bit longer. If you submit your game early in the month, more people would play it, submit it later, then lots of people will still play it, but it will be much higher.

So, it balances out.

Posted by lembi2001 15th April, 2009

why not do it a month in hand?? for example of April's games would be in GOTM for May and then all of May's games would be in June's GOTM.

This way ALL games submitted would get a full month of playtime to be judged on?

Posted by Del Duio 15th April, 2009

I mean, seriously, when was the last time any kliker ever mentioned that the game won a GOTW award?

I do all the time

If you submit your game early in the month, more people would play it, submit it later, then lots of people will still play it, but it will be much higher.

Maybe we could also have a time restriction on when people can vote on a game? The idea would be the longer they play it the better (or worse) it got for them?

Example: "Wow this game has a great start menu! 5 stars!" (15 minutes later) "But the gameplay is meh... Too bad I can't change my vote to 3 stars"

GOTW was not exciting news. "new game of the week winner!" and then youre like so? The GOTM announcment will be much more exciting!

Posted by Carnivorous id 19th April, 2009

I liked GOTW because I don't download everything on the site. GOTW helped me catch the games I might have missed. It was also something a noob could could hope to win. GOTM is for seasoned members of the site and nothing I'd feel capable of shooting for right now. I hope it doesn't discourage new members.
