This is about object scope.

If you don't know what that is refer to this excellent article by PixelTheif:

Ok now for the simple question.

I want to count the number of any particular set of active objects that are currently in the object scope,
I can do this easily with extensions or a loop, but I want to do it without both.

Does anyone know a way?

Can't be done.
You have to use one of the methods you mentioned.

That's what I figured.

I think I'm going to suggest a new action to click team that does this, it's a rather useful functionality.
