Its actually nothing new in the USA. In April, the supreme court (SCOTUS) here, with a 5-4 voting on party lines (5 bush/reagan appointees), created a ruling that completely destroys class action lawsuits against any corporation- Sony is not the first. Any corporation can now copy/paste a waiver onto their product, whatever it is, from toilets to cell phones to games, stating that you cannot enter class action suits against them, and that absurdly unethical and illegal waiver is now legal and binding.
As noted, if a company bilked you out of $1,000,000, you could sue their pants off to get your money back. But if they bilk you out of $100, no lawyer, anywhere, is going to represent you for a $33 fee. Hence, now law suits are entirely impossible against corporations for systematic abuse. They can pull the plug on goods and services, steal from customers, and face no legal repercussions. As the example goes, a company gives out 'free cellphones' that are advertised as totally free with no hidden fees, then charges you $33 in 'sales tax' and opens an expensive plan automatically- clearly false advertising and hidden fees. But each lawsuit has to be brought individually, and $11 is not an attractive reward to a lawyer.
Well from Sony's prospective I would do the same thing.
Like any online service you should be willing to accept the risks that go along with sharing data.
True.... everybody knows the internet is anything but secure and it you are willing to submit credit card and other person information then you must accept responsibility and the consequences for your own actions.
That said, Sony is an evil and selfish company run by greedy men who don't care about anyone or anything except themselves and making more cash. Smash the state!

Because when a company offers a service that involves and requires financial details and information from its customers, you don't expect those details to be compromised. You're putting your trust in an established and very well known company, who are obviously aware that their security system is STILL not robust if they force you to sign an agreement waiving your legal rights against them.
You're missing the point and the perspective. You can hardly compare computer damage to stealing information. Stealing is theft. It is a deliberate act. If somehow any of my games damaged a computer, that would be accidental, but when you download software off the internet and from an unknown source you always run that risk. That's why things like virus scanners were invented for. Sony is NOT an unknown source. It is a registered and reputable company. It offers a service where it obtains confidential information from users paying for that service.
Everyone who has a brain cell knows the dangers of the internet. They know that software can contain viruses and any self respecting computer user should not go online without virus protection. Sony, nor any other company for that matter, should not run a service without protection.
