I had a few issues with Windows 7, aesthetically. There was just some subtly to it that really threw me off. I thought Windows Vista was just so beautiful, and I kind of figured they butchered the pretty stuff in Windows 7, almost like Microsoft purposely made it so that we couldn't have both pretty and fast in the same package.
Image
I think I managed to pull it together though. What about you guys? Who here had a chance to pick up Windows 7 and wants to express their opinion on either what I did above or what you think about Windows 7 in general?

I knew I'd like it. Okay, I haven't got it yet, it's still being mailed because I got my brand new awesome HD output/input + much more laptop with a tiein for a free upgrade to Windows 7. It looks awesome from what you showed us. Can't wait to ditch Vista. Also, how's the new version of Paint? That's always the most climactic thing for me in a new Windows.

I've yet to see if my campus bookstore carries it cheaper than the online student deal, and I never installed the beta or RC, so I'll get back to you once I've installed it.

Like Ricky, I didn't have problems with Vista. I've been running the Windows 7 RC1 since May and it's so epic I don't like going back to Vista. Windows 7 is just ultimate. Very convenient, and anything that doesn't work I can just run in Windows XP Mode.

Paint is awesome, with new brushes and autoshapes and stuff, just makes life easier.

I too was one of those people who had a rather fantastic experience with Windows Vista. People always thought I was a moron but fact of the matter is, it worked for me. XP worked for me too, but Vista worked just as well and it looked prettier so naturally I went to it. I wasn't losing anything... so the people who called me stupid, are just ignorant.

However I have to admit... Windows 7 is pretty fast. I'm adjusting to the new taskbar which I really didn't like at first, but it's actually a very responsive operating system compared to both Windows XP and Windows Vista. It's a champ, and if none of that appeals to anyone, the new animated Windows logo starting up, is hot! A tad too much bloom for my tastes, but it's got to be the prettiest presentation yet.

Linux is just flipping better.
There's ways to run windows programs OR (if you want to) to run an entire operating system inside Linux, thus making virus's far less effective.

Both our study PC's have Windows 7 on them but I'm sticking with XP still. Don't like Microsoft's idea of pretty. Visually it all looks very cluttered and I've never been keen on their font rendering .

Few things made my blood boiler hotter than to have people immediately ridicule me for saying that I liked Windows Vista. Honest to dear lord, that just made me want to go around punching kittens... and I love kittens. People truly are morons. I mean I love how people who don't even know jack shit about what an operating system is, are out there calling me an idiot for using Windows Vista, claiming they installed it and used it themselves. I'm pointing out in particular, this silly sophomore in highschool who needed me to explain to him what a gigabyte was.

LOL really? It's really a matter of preference. It's the out right lies that bother me, like people saying vista gets blue screens. Um... it only gets those if there is a hardware failure or a bad driver. And that screen is a tool to help you figure out whats causing it.

Really? I like Vista better than XP. It's really imperative that you have a good setup though, because I hated it before I stuck 3GBs of RAM in my laptop. And also started using hibernation. I would probably still hate Vista if I had to wait for it to fully load every time I turned on the compy.

Anyway, I think the point of this thread was to discuss 7, not have yet another Vista sucks campaign.

Bingo. A bunch of my friends and family like Vista, back on XP they used to rely on a plethora of external apps for photos and stuff. But for someone like me, who only uses Windows for games and MMF I prefer the barebones setup that XP offers.

youre right. neither is "better". there is a lot i liked about vista. there is also a lot about it that, as a developer, disgusts me. and that outweighed anyhthing i liked about it. xp, like 98 before it, is the golden child that most will cling to until it loses all support by microsoft.

im not going to rant, and im not ANTI vista. i really dont care what os you use, just dont tell me its better than xp. its not. ive used it. ive developed for/on it. its not as good.

i shall forever stand behind the quote "everything microsoft touches becomes hopelessly complicated".

I think Win7 merges the good of Vista and XP and shaves out the bad on both. I even came across an article which stated some people have noticed as much as a 30% increase in battery life over Windows XP using Windows 7. Strange when you think about aero, maybe they had it shut off (most likely), but it only goes to support the idea that Windows 7 might very well be the reason for XP users to finally make the OS leap.

It's understandable if it takes a while though, we suffered the same problem with Windows 2000 to Windows XP.

Um, why would you do that? Paint is just fine. Do you not like ribbons? It isn't like they're bad or anything. You'll get to format text with multiple colors now. I'm pretty sure anyway that they're made not to work that way. Which is why I have to record sounds into WMA as opposed to WAV with 7's sound recorder.

Is the ribbon interface the thing they have in Word 07? I don't mind it, but I do mind that they changed it for no reason. It doesn't make anything easier to use, just really kiddy looking. Now people who had a semblance of an idea how to use Word are starting from scratch and asking me how to do things all over again. -__- Unnecessary interface redesigns bug the schnitzel out of me.

What's the ribbon interface?

I haven't really messed with the new paint, it was just an example. I did open up spider solitaire while trying it out at the store and just preferred the movement of the original.

I would probably stay with XP forever but you have to upgrade sometime, I'm just hoping that I can carry over some of those little things that I'm used to.

I think you're mistaken XP Mode for the Virtual PC. If you're using Windows 7 Professional, go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

After you select your edition and language, step 4 will have you download and install Windows XP Mode first and then Virtual PC. After you have both of them installed in the correct order, start up Virtual PC so that you're at the Windows XP desktop. THEN you need to install the applications you want to use in XP Mode, remember you're not using XP mode yet, just Virtual PC. Once you have the applications you want to use in XP Mode, installed inside Windows XP, shut down Windows XP on the Virtual PC and close it (you need to shut it down before you close it or XP Mode won't work.)

After you've done all of that, go back into the start menu and find XP Mode in the All Programs submenus, and there should be a folder with shortcuts to all the applications you installed in Virtual PC. Click any of them, and the application will open up the program in XP Mode.

Technically they are still running inside Virtual PC; however there is a defiant difference. For example, they run inside an independent window, using the Luna Blue theme (default) instead of Aero (rather than running inside of a window running Windows XP), and more importantly, when you go to do things like opening or saving, the dialog box will not be contained inside of a separate installation of Windows. Instead it'll be in sync with your folders and storage devices on Windows 7, as if it was just a normal program running on the Windows 7 desktop.

I hate hate hate Vista's resource inefficiency. It is more stable than XP. It looks nicer than XP (IMHO, XP looks a little plasticy). But Vista is just horrible with a lot of the programs and games I use. Vista was supposed to look better, but the thing about graphics is that you just don't notice after a while.

Windows 7 looks like a nice balance between pretty and functional. Seriously, you can't get anything to be fast with a lot of special effects. Image processing is still the biggest eater of system resources today, far more so than speech processing. An O/S is supposed to be functional and fast.

That's why it uses the graphics cards hardware acceleration to run the fancy effects. Honestly, there's no use in just letting your $150 graphics card just sit there wasting away when you're not playing any games or anything.

I'm sticking with XP for a little longer. I didn't like the way Vista upped the requirements of games and the likes ( and i noticed fps drops in just about any game). Vista just isn't meant for the low-end pc, and though i know 7 does alot better in that aspectm but i'm just going to sit and wait until i get a new PC

But isn't that a waste of electricty and such? PCs gets hotter and louder when the GPU kicks in and for something needless like a menu, I dunno... Just seems like a waste all round when OS's should be preserving as much resources, battery and all that temperature side of things.

Well you can shut them off... it's not like it's force on you. Just go in and shut aero off, it's not hard.

Honestly though, I've actually noticed a significant improvement on overall application performance, using aero. Maybe not things like loading and such, but the responsiveness of the windows is dramatically improved, so for me it's not limited to simply a visual appeal.

I think Microsoft's philosophy with Aero is, People have these graphics beasts just sitting there doing nothing. Might as well put them to work, while at the same time, lightening the load on the processor.

You figure, what is a graphics card, besides this little beastly single-minded processor that sits there idle 80% of the time you ever use a computer. If you want to save on electricity, that's fine. However if you'd like to make sure you're getting the most out of your computer, Aero is the best way to do it, I think.

Oh god, they've put ribbons in paint now?

I switched to openoffice because of the ribbon interface office 2007 had and now I'll need to download a pixel doodling program that opens quickly D:

Why don't they give us an option to use the old interface, and why can't we customise it anymore? ;_;

So I just finished upgrading to 7 Ultimate ($8 baby!). I haven't had a chance to put it through rigorous testing but so far I'm not as blown away as I was hoping.

Pen input seems noticeably snappier. It also fixed an issue I was having with connecting to a WPA2 network.

I'm certainly hopeful. Once I tweak things into place I'm sure I'll love it. It's already growing on me. Though I don't know what I think of the really hip nature-y art thing they've got going on.

EDIT: The new taskbar still feels a little foreign and... attention-grabby, but once I switched it to include text and turned the window color to a nice dark blue, I liked it much better. I upgraded from Vista rather than a clean install (don't ever do that; decided to this time) but it's still faster, even with all my old junk. Everything feels more streamlined and locations of things in menus seems a lot more logical than they did in Vista. I'm still missing my Right click desktop > properties though. That was such a better system.

I'm still using XP like a caveman, but I am really curious to try out Windows 7. I would need to buy a new PC for it though because I absolutely need XP in order to run my music composing software.

Does anyone by chance know about its compatibility with MMF 1.5? Is it still the same deal as with Vista?

Well, since TGF1 runs... I think incompatibilities are fewer and farther in between than has been rumored. What composition software do you use?

I use a combination of Noteworthy Composer and Synthfont, but what i'm more worried about is my Yamaha XG SoftSynth driver. It's a known fact that it doesn't work on Vista without some major tweaking. D:
